Description: The Great Plains were originally referred to by early settlers as the “Great American Desert.” To grow crops in an arid environment requires a steady source of water. Water rights in the West are based on who got the water first (“first in time, first in right”). When people started drilling shallow wells in the unconsolidated and permeable sediments of the Piedmont they quickly drained water away from the surface waters. That created some thorny legal issues and employment of geologists as expert witnesses.
