Description:
I missed Bruno's fall gaggle but am posting these two pics to show that the alternative was pretty good. Three couples on a 40' 'barge' spent a week on the Midi Canal in the south of France. The midi runs from Bordeaux...in central NW France down through wine country and into the Med. We did a 150 mile segment with 16 locks and a myriad of small towns along the way. You can anchor any place along the canal and walk...or bicycle into the villages/towns for provisions and libation or enjoy great food at the many cafes and bistros along the way.The old tow path alongside the canal is now suitable for biking and as there is a speed limit of 5 mph on the canal...the bikers can scout ahead for the good spots. Thier reports were sometimes dubious as they usually had stopped at the many vineyards along the canal and sampled the great...and reasonably priced wines....which the region is known for.
If any of you want info about this great trip...Google 'The Midi Canal ' or 'Locaboat' or contact me for more info.
There was very little 'splashing' as the rental boats do not have holding tanks. I would imagine that in june...July...August, the stench might be bad. We were lucky...very little traffic and sunny 72* weather so no stench.
No splashing but a lot of dashing.

Very nice, Dave, but I'm still having a problem with the water quality issue.

Great pictures Dave. Isn't it interesting how some Europeans seem to be so concerned about global warming but using streams as a sewer is OK?

No surprise from the inventors of perfume. OK it was really invented by Mesopotamians and Egyptians, but that will be for Dan's tale below:

Now, Eric, I've heard enough tall tales from seaplaners to know I'm not the only one who tells whoppers.
