Description:
It was late in the afternoon and I was looking at a long way between airports. Should I try to get further south or settle for a sure thing before dark? A sure thing looked pretty good at Meridian, Mississippi. I took the sure thing.
The lineman said I had been the only airplane in all day.
“Why?”
“I dunno. Might have something to do with the hurricane coming. Most folks headed north yesterday.”
Hmmmm….that didn’t sound too good. I hadn’t figured on all the refugees from the gulf coast heading north. I was lucky to find a hotel room. I felt a little guilty about that when I saw people parked along the side of the road for the evening. Then again, we’re all refugees from something.
The daily flight log looked like this:
Pogue (OWP) OK to Arkansas River at Coweta (splash) AK River to North Little Rock (ORK) AK, 3.7 hrs. Little Rock to Mississippi River (splash) Mississippi River to Meridian (MEI), MS, 3.5 hrs.
Total of 7.2 hours.
“A mere 411 nm, but at 70 knots that would take 6.2 hours. A full hour more than a direct course.”
“Yeah, but we had to divert to Little Rock. That adds another 26 nm!”
“Sure. Add another twenty minutes. It’s still not a shining example of flight efficiency.”
“Ha! Do the math. With the diversion, that makes 6.6 hours instead of 7.2, or 92% efficient! That’s an “A” on any flight test!
“It’s an ‘A’ only if you forget to average in the previous ‘F’s from the first four days. But, even a ‘C’ is good for a refugee from responsibility.”
