Description:
The standard SeaRey tour always includes the buffalo on Smith Island in Lake Apopka. When my friend Tiff came to visit, we cruised by the island. As always, the buffalo were congregated in a small group near the water’s edge. We flew on to lunch at the Tiki Hut.
Coming back from lunch I was focused on the clouds reflected in the glassy pea green water of the lake. “Hey, Dan, what do you think is stirring up the water over there?”
“Where?”
He pointed to a large brown mass moving slowly, but deliberately through the water. He answered his own question: “Buffalo! The buffalo are making a break from the island!”
“Now that’s something you don’t see every day. That can’t be good.”
Indeed, the watery moat surrounding the island had been the buffaloes’ keeper for years. No more. Who knows what prompted the little group to strike out from their home towards the distant mainland? What would have motivated them to swim a mile or so towards the distant shore? Greener grass?
Alligators constantly circle the island. These shaggy guys were far from shore, deep in alligator territory.
“Maybe we should go get their owner?” Tiff suggested.
“He’s not home. His boats are gone.”
“If they make it, that will really shake up the neighborhood over there.”
“Yeah. I imagine a buffalo stampede is all little Bobby and Billy will need to add some realism to their Cowboy and Indians game.”
