Description: It seems odd that Richmond--about 100 miles from the Atlantic--is a seaport. The city was built at the falls of the James River. The James is the largest river in the state and rises far to the west, beyond the first range of mountains. Cargo used to be transferred to small barges called batteaux, passed via locks around the white-water rapids and upstream for several hundred miles. The batteaux are gone now, except for a few reconstructions that carry intrepid boatsmen and women down from Lynchburg nearly to Richmond one week each summer. But seagoing traffic below the falls is increasing, especially now that fuel price increases have made trucks uncompetitive. This barge isn't going to sea, but it pushes barges between Richmond and Norfolk several times a week.
