Description:
Late Saturday afternoon it was essentially the Winter Solstice (only a few hours early) and to celebrate I flew down the James River east of Hopewell, VA, under a low overcast. The Chesapeake Bay is about 50 nm farther and the Atlantic Ocean, another 20. As you can see by comparing the airspeed (mph, on the right) and the groundspeed (kts), there was some wind. The EFIS shows it in the lower right corner. All the same, it was a lovely, soft flight. I did three splash-and-goes, but with that long fetch, the waves were piling up considerably, so I let the hull kiss the crests and went back to flying without really settling down. It was a very satisfying way to celebrate the shortest day of the year.
