Description: The water wasn't perfectly flat and smooth, so maybe you'd think it wasn't glassy.

Take a close look at the flag. (It marks a submerged piling.) Can you see where the water line is on its staff?

    Here's a closer look:

My brain tells me that the water has to be halfway between the flag and the reflected flag. My eyes see it differently. Attachments:

    Don,
This should to be one of the illustrations in your forthcoming book of flying the searey......

I see exactly what I'd expect. The movement of the water has spread the reflection of the bottom of the staff. You don't get a full reflection of the flag itself because the uneven water is reflecting as much of the air/sky around it as it is the flag.

It was a very odd--and interesting--illusion. All of us who looked at it felt that the water line was right at the top of the reflected flag. We knew better, but our eyes just wouldn't believe that the line had to be midway between the flags. We looked at it for about five minutes, from several different angles, including right down at water level. It's no wonder that glassy water is tricky to land on.
