Description:
Some things just don’t quite line up. My quickly cobbled in-flight plan was to stop in Eufaula, Alabama to stay on the lake. The beautiful inn on the lake was, however, fully stocked with weekend fishermen.
I decided to refuel and get a little further flight out of the remaining daylight. An inconspicuous sign on the self-service fuel pump proclaimed quietly that it was “Out of Service.”
Bugger.
Calls to find a taxi service in Eufaula were frustratingly ineffective. It was starting to get dark.
Maybe I had enough fuel to make a nearby airport with services? According to my quick planning and calculation, I had enough for the thirty minute flight with equal reserves.
Maybe.
It was, however, the first cross country flight of the airplane. I couldn’t be certain that the fuel gauge was accurate. Even if it was, five gallons of fuel was not enough for a fun flight in the dark. The airplane had already thrown me a couple of nasty surprises and I didn’t need any more.
I was about to hitchhike to town when I saw the telephone number of the airport manager. He recommended a nearby hotel where the manager agreed to come pick me up.
The Super 8 hotel was not so super. My time frame was now lagging largely towards the really late side. The airplane was, however, safely parked to fly another day. That’s about as good as an on-the-spot plan can get.
