Description: Glass envy. Garmin AERA vs Garmin 295 with Dynon D10A.
Went flying with my new AERA 500 in my hip holster. Very easy to use, but different due to touch screen. Some getting used to, but where are my old waypoints? And how do I download my track logs? How do I connect to my Dynon D10? These will be solved, with more $.
There is incredible road and town detail which I had with a special map card into the 295.
What you also get is a complete terrain and obstacle database which had surprising features. More to come.
The physical location in JIB is not ideal, as you see because the presentation is better, but not as these angles and lighting conditions.
What I didn't realize that the AERA 500 is also a great automotive GPS with MP3 and bluetooth telephone. But don't expect to get to these in AV mode ! There are really 2 machines in that box that don't really talk to one another, except for that roads database.

    85 or 93 mph?

    Eric
Thanks for noticing. I just never look at the Dynon (93 mph) vs the steam gauge (85 mph). I've been trying to reset the weird settings that Dave L. had put in for just about everything else for his a/c. I'm having more problems with radios and haven't concentrated on solving this discrepancy. Anyway, it always seems the real speed is the lower one!

85 or 93 mph or 60.1 kts GPS speed--which is about 69 mph, which with the Dynon's 26 mph headwind is about 95 mph (which is what the Dynon indicates as the TAS)? Aiiii! My head!

Fortunately, on this site there's no need to get technical. We're up in a SeaRey: enjoy the ride!

    Hi Lee:

I have been running the 560 for a few weeks now (Sarasota Avionics provided an excellent trade-in price on my 496). It is a remarkable box, and as you note, it provides amazing features.
Like you, I run it both on the road and in the air.

If one made a list of all the features one would like to have in a GPS receiver, I cannot think of any that were left out.

Best,
Larry

.

Larry
I've got to agree with you that Garmin has a winner with this box. I've got 195, 295 and Pilot III. The AERA is definitely the best.
What I am having a challenge with is connecting to the D10A and downloading track files. I'm trying to order an aviation power cable for the Dynon but I could buy another GPS for the $ they want.
Hey, how did I miss you again this year. I've been down to the Grand River near Caledonia, and could do this again...in the spring.

Nice gaggle of instruments, looks like you should be launching a rocket in Iraq!!

Never mind: you should see the DVD player and bar fridge on the other side!
