Description: Getting up close and personal with a natural oddity is common fare for a SeaRey. If you are so inclined, you can stick your hand into the muck. There is no difference in density or feel between the ooze and the overlying water. (Yep, I was so inclined, but I did wash my hands before dinner.)

The ooze is about 3’ thick. Particles from the algae make up 10-15% of the ooze by dry weight. Air drying the bottom gunk produces a biomass with 6,600 calories per gram. Future SeaRey fuel fer sure.

Thanks for the hot poop on this lake, Dan. It's now on my list of Places To Go.

In case you happen to be a bottom feeder and care to taste this biomass, 6,600 calories is only 6.6 Calories. Note that the food industry normally referes to kilocalories [kcal] as 'Calories'. For reference, 1 g of alcohol = 7 Calories.

    Dan,

Very interesting info on mud lake. So you had to wait until I was at the bottom of the planet before you came exploring up my way!
I have been watching with interest your progress in the Southern Ocean, Robert. Mud Lake is not as spectacular as what you have been seeing! How about a debriefing at Gator Joes when you get back?

Sounds like a good plan. I should be back around Feb 10th. We will have to pick a warmish day to insure we are well distracted.
