Description: Usually I don’t deviate for dirt, but when you’re flying over it in a SeaRey, you have plenty of time for viewing its colors. The topography below was about to undergo a drastic change. That’s always a good reason to pay attention to the dirt below.

I found this colorful dirt along the Fall Line. The color has nothing to do with seasons; it has everything to do with a geomorphic discontinuity between Piedmont and Coastal Plain sediments. The Fall Line is an ancient ridge line stretching from Georgia to New Jersey. Clays and sands from the young Appalachian Mountains were deposited along the coast of an ancient sea across the southern third of Georgia. Pretty white kaolin clay is covered with red and brown sediments more typically associated with Georgia.
