Description: A peaceful lake along a lazy river. The Peace River flows from Bartow southwest to Charlotte Harbor. Handcock Lake is one of the first deep water bodies as the river emerges from the Green Swamp.

The river empties into the Charlotte Harbor Estuary, the second largest estuary in Florida. The estuary is considered one of the healthiest in the nation (well, pending the potential Gulf oil invasion). The river is also a major source of fresh water for the Charlotte County area.

Dan, Do you know where the fresh water first becomes brackish? I would like to know where I can land and not worry about a rinse before putting the plane away for the night...

Mark Futch operates a Maule on floats out of Punta Gorda (KPGA), Wayne. He said the water is brackish at the 41 highway bridge, but fresh above it. Unfortunately it didn't seem like there were many open areas between the bridge and Handcock Lake. If you haven't talked to Mark, I'd recommend you call him. He has been operating seaplanes in the area for more than 20 years.

Contact information:
Boca Grande Seaplane Air Taxi
P.O.
