Description: Originally mining was done by hand (shovel) from the sand banks. Eventually huge draglines were brought in the extract the mineral throughout the river basin. More than 180,000 acres have been mined and reclaimed in the river basin.

The Bone Valley formation contains the largest phosphate deposit in the U.S. It supplies 25% of the world’s phosphate, 75% of the U.S.

Ore bodies now being mined are 15’ to 50’ below the surface, and 10’ to 20’ thick. Draglines can mine up to 15 acres per month.
