Description: The Horizontal Waterfalls
My recent trip around the North West coast of Australia
took me through the Kimberly Region. You would really
need a month to properly explore this remote and
fascinating coastline. This picture shows “The Horizontal
Waterfalls”. They open out into Talbot Bay on the
Buccaneer Archipelago. Two large lakes are connected to
each other and to the ocean by a pair of very narrow
chasms. This by itself would be interesting, but coupled
with the fact that this coast has the second highest tidal
range in the world (greater than 30 foot range in spring
tides) and you get fascinating effects.
This picture shows the tide pouring out through the gap,
in 6 hours time the tide will be pouring back in the other
way. In preparing for the trip I had considered trying to
cruise through the gap the SeaRey, but that gap is way
too narrow. I had to content myself with many landing
on each of the lakes and on the glassy bay beyond. Truly
magic country.

    Ross,
Gorgeous, awesome AND fascinating. We've only toured the 'Other Coasts'...so never had the opportunity to
encounter anything like this.

    Ross
That photo brings back memories of many, many many hours at or below 500 feet, doing Coastal Surveilance in the late 1970's between Geraldton and Darwin, mainly between Broome and Darwin. In those days we would hardly see anybody, a couple of hermits and a boat or two if we where lucky. We refuelled from drums at Mitchell Plateau.
Cessna 310 and Aero Commanders Shrikes. I will have to dust my fotos one of these days.
Thanks for the photo

Well Pat, not much has changed is this area since you were here in the
70’s. In a whole days flying I saw virtually no people, boats or buildings
and, just like you I refuelled from drums at Mitchell plateau strip. (Its a
long way between drinks in this remote area so I carried two 5 gallon jerry
cans in the passenger seat) I am sure you will appreciate the attached
picture of the most recent “Departure Lounge” at Mitchell Plateau strip. Attachments:

    Please sir, More.
How close is this to Katherine NT?
I opened my photo book from 1996 when we did site surveys for the radars at Darwin, Tindal...Williamtown, Amberley, Townsville, and Perth (GinGin). That was a GOOD month of being guided by great RAAF associates. Ah, but now I'm retired. I need more!
Lee, Katherine is in what we call the 'Top End' whereas the Horizontal Water falls are over on the North
West coast, about 1,000 km separate them. - I'll post more.

    Jack
Spend many moments gazing at the contrails of you blokes heading to Asia and onwards, hoping to get the call for the interview, we did not understand them what magic flying we had. You probably looked down, wishing to be flying around these magic part of the world

    Pat
It was fun making the contrails, but you had to like chicken, it did have its benifits (the mouse tatoo) but that's another story.
Now I can enjoy a hard sandwitch (chicken) a coffee and enjoy some of the best flying I have ever done, but you know all about that, I sometimes think 'should I be having this much fun', the answer of course, is YES.

To Russ and Lee and anyone who wants more Aussie seaplane stories, you should join the Australian
Seaplane Pilots Association -SPAA (only $50 Aust per year, pay by credit card online - really easy!!) then
you would get the SPAA newsletter emailed to you. It’s full of interesting personal flying stories, safety advice
from Prof Dale DeRemer, trip plans and lots of good photos. AND your could submit your own stories. The
editor of the SPAA newsletter (me!) is always looking for good material. Go to www.seaplanes.org.au
