Description:
Mission Objective: Look for SeaRey landing zone to rendezvous with yacht in Manhattan
Outcome: Failure (to dock)
The yacht owner wanted to depart from Chelsea Docks on the Hudson River in a SeaRey. I was skeptical. First I checked the legalities.
“Can’t touch the Jersey shore. Seaplanes only allowed at seaplane bases.”
“Not within 200’ of the City shore without a permit that you can’t get.”
“Can’t get into 23rd Street seaplane base without prior checkout and authorization.”
Fine. I’ll just land in the middle of the river.
The yacht’s helicopter pilot, Steve, called a friend at NYPD aviation. “It is perfectly legal, but if you do it you can expect to be interviewed. It will be investigated.”
Fine. Bring it on. The yacht owner has plenty of lawyers down in the bilge.
Steve offered to check out water conditions in the helicopter. He and I took some liberties with our mission profile. Steve took me on an extended low level tour of the big island. Legal or not, ferryboat wakes mixed with currents made the river a wild cauldron unsuitable for anything smaller than an Albatross.
“If not here, then on to Hamptons.” The yacht steams north today with the SeaRey following overhead.
The SeaRey life. It’s a job, eh?

KGON (Groton, CT). I'm tending to the yacht, but I'll see if I can get some ground time.

PA graciously offered me Calvin's SeaRey, John (N165CB), and I haven't had a good frisbee toss since I left your place.

NJ is definately not seaplane friendly. It's one of the reasons I came to FL. Winter was a helpful phenomenon too.

I had a long talk with the NJ Aviation Services guy yesterday, Joe. He said they are limited by law to having seaplane ops at seaplane bases. The guy was actively pushing for new bases (5 in the last two years). He did say, however, that if I landed on the NY side I could taxi anywhere a boat could in NJ waters.

Dan, there used to be a seaplane base on the Hudson above NYC, near Buchanan. I think it's been decommissioned, but the water there is fine for SeaReys and, I think, for yachts as well. There's a yacht club just across the bay from the ex-SPB.

It's still there on the map. The yacht guy says there is nothing like being downtown. Of course, the yacht is just off downtown Martha's Vineyard tonight.

Hah. Wacht yacht guy knows downtown? Anyway, he could just send the seaplane tender up to the SPB while he sips champagne at 21.

I've been tempted several times to land on the Hudson in a SeaRey. The water where Sullenberger landed looked quite smooth on TV and also from 800 feet. You could make a low pass to check it out. Or you could have a look from the docks on the Manhattan side. You can get right out to the river there.

In any case, I hope you have someone there with a video camera to record the landing and the hoisting aboard the yacht. It should be quite a show.

I can assure you the NYC aviation cops make their own rules. Last Sunday as our cruise ship pulled
down the hudson, a NYC helo flew down both sides of our ship within 200' at eye level. Some
passengers thought it was cool. I just thought what would happen if we did that prank. Oh, I'm sure
they were hot on the trail of a terrorist on the ship.
