Description:
Email from Dan Nickens is always interesting. This came a few days ago:
'...I volunteered to stop over at Bay Bridge (W29) next Monday (July 12) for lunch. Helen (the SeaRey CFI there) had invited some prospective students to drop in for SeaRey demo flights. 'Now it appears that [I will have to go] back to Florida via the airlines... Before I call Helen and delay the demos, I thought I'd check with you to see if you have any interest in filling in.
'I should warn you that the only compensation Helen has offered is a hotdog lunch…. '
What could I say? I had already stood Helen up twice for hotdog lunches because of bad weather. It looked like kismet.
On the other hand, the radar showed a front approaching from the west, already pushing ugly looking thunderstorms over the mountains. But it was moving slowly enough for me to get there, enjoy a hot dog or two, and get back to KFCI well before the front arrived.
So I hastily wiped some of the grime off of N123XM, gassed it up, and took off for Bay Bridge Airport, about 115 miles up the Chesapeake Bay, on an island east of Washington, DC. Piece of cake. First, say goodbye to Richmond, VA, 'River City.' Richmond is a seaport, although it doesn't have much seagoing traffic these days. Here you see why it's located where it is: the fall line. This is the James River looking upstream from the top of the fall line. (Ignore the two channels feeding a sewage treatment plant.) The Kanawha Canal used to run along the right bank to conduct cargo boats past the falls and 150 miles or more into the interior.
