Description:
Since we weren’t welcome on Wakaya, we headed across the water to the old capital of Fiji, Levuka, in the helicopter. We got a great welcome there.
One of the only flat spots on the island, Levuka was the first European settlement in Fiji. It quickly became a place for outcasts, sailors that jumped ship, criminals, and assorted other misfits. The native residents objected to their new neighbors and frequently burned the town down. (Or at least that’s the European story….apparently there was a lot of drunkenness and fighting among the town residents and who knows who kicked the lantern over.) The good times ended in 1882 when the capital was moved to Suva.
