Late this afternoon Norman Frank Gracy, Major USAF ret., departed on an out of this world adventure. He was 83 years old. His fascination with flight occupied more than 74 of those years. He started out in Stearmans, flew through the cold war in a B-47, fought in a hot war flying a C-47, was shot down in Albuquerque, flew military brass and a U.S. Vice President around the world, was a senior instructor at Flight Safety, and ended up his tour here flying a 1996 SeaRey of his own creation (AKA ""Up Thang"", AKA ""Calculated Risk""). Though late in life he could be outspoken, he left behind a legacy of love of aviation that is unexcelled.

I really enjoyed being Frank's wingman and fellow catherder. We shared a few beers over the years at the end of the flying day. I can
recite a few of his stories from memory and I never tired listening to him spin the yarn. Godspeed Frank.

Sad news, indeed. Frank was one of the first SeaReyers I met--at the Garners' First Annual SeaRey Gathering--and he was always thoughtful and gracious. He was sometimes outspoken online, but he knew what he knew, which is more than one can say about most people. He once pointed out, as we were hefting a Ercoupe wing at X-61 (it was lighter than a SeaRey wing), that we were wearing identical running shoes and seemed amused by it. I thought it was really cool.

A true subject matter expert on the Searey. Always safety focused and he produced some delightful flying drawings.

Dave Edward - Apr 04,2016   Viewers  | Reply
He called a spade a spade. It was always entertaining to read his posts. RIP Frank !

Sad to hear. Frank was full of aviation wisdom (and life's wisdom as well) I'll never forget ""never get the ""A"" model of
anything, and TLAR engineering. The world lost a gem. God Speed Frank!
