Description:
The island of Taveuni is famous for its many waterfalls. The mountains are over 4000’ high. I was told there is a SeaRey suitable fresh water lake at about 3000’. I was also told by a CAAFI official (Civil Aviation Authority of the Fiji Islands) that landing on fresh water lakes in Fiji is prohibited. The regulations were strictly enforced by cloud officers that collected in great abundance around the protective peaks.
Too bad, so sad. At Lake Tagimaucia a unique red and white flower blooms from October to January. Attempts to transplant the Tagimaucia flower elsewhere have all failed.
The local legend telling the origin of the flower involves a lovely maiden in love with a poor young man. Too soon she discovered she was to be married to an old and ugly rich guy. (That sounds familiar enough.) The maiden ran into the rain forest to escape her dreadful fate, but she became hopelessly entangled in vines. Her tears fell to the ground, turning into red and white blossoms.
It wasn’t long before a crazy cannibal came along and took her home for dinner. No, wait…that’s another story.
In the flower story the villagers rescue the maiden and, seeing the beautiful (if somewhat sad) flowers, allowed her to marry her true love. She lived the rest of her life in poverty and the handsome young guy soon began to look a lot like the ugly rich guy, only without the money. (Or something like that.)
