Description:
Fort Jefferson lies about 60 miles west of Key West, in the Dry Tortugas. It was built in the 1800's to guard the entrance to the Gulf of Mexico. As you can see, the island is very small, covered by the fort, which would have been a massive undertaking to build, as everything needed to be imported, including bricks, cannons, mortar, food and fresh water. Towards the top side of this photo is deeper water, where ships could anchor under the protection of the hundreds of cannons of the fort.
