Thanks for talking with me today Daniel.

Hi, Scott. Did he talk you into buying it?

Scott Peters - Jun 09,2011 Viewers | Reply
Not yet - but he's tried before. It's still an insurance and hanger thing. Right now, I can either pay for a plane or pay the fixed cost, but not both - unless we can meet in the middle some where.

    Scott,
where do you want to keep your plane?

KFCI is the closest to the house. I do like the folding wing on the LSX though. Another problem I'm finding is that a lot of SeaReys were not transfered to be classified in the Light Sport catagory and still require a medical. I have let my medical expire and have no plans on going through that again. I'm not sure if this aircraft is in this classification or not, forgot to ask Daniel.

Scott - you can add the folding wing feature to the classic - when the factory makes the folding mechanism available. As Daniel says, you can fly any searey under light sport. (unless it has an in-flight adjustable prop.)

Daniel Paul Myers - Jun 11,2011 Viewers | Reply
    Ken is correct.
However, this one is ground adjustable

Daniel Paul Myers - Jun 11,2011 Viewers | Reply
You can fly this one with light sport privileges

Thanks again Daniel. Ken, if that is true, then I'm more confused about what I've learned or should I say misunderstood. If anyone cares to enlighten me, feel free to email AirTropic@yahoo.com.

Unless the person who originally registered the Searey did so at over 1430 lbs (the plane, not the guy!), anyone with a light sport license or above may fly it under light sport.

Thank you Ken. The weight might have been what I found in a couple that I looked at a while back. I don't feel right getting a really nice, pretty bird because I will probably leave it tied on the tarmac - with engine and canopy covers.

Here's another question: A Sport Pilot needs an endorsement to fly into larger airports, does a Private Pilot operating under Sport Pilot rules need the same endorsement?

Don Maxwell - Jun 12,2011 Viewers | Reply
Nope. You already have it, because you're a private pilot flying under less stringent rules. But if you don't have a seaplane rating, you'll need an endorsement (I think there's a different name for it) for water ops in your SeaRey.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 12,2011 Viewers | Reply
That level of question is probably not a good one to ask on this site. You really want to look at the official regulation for that. Remember, the answers you get here are worth what you paid for them.
However, when you find the reg, be sure to post it here so others know.
That is not a comment on Don's answer - we posted at the same time and I just added this...although I'm not sure I agree with Don's answer on endorsement for water ops in a searey.

I understand Ken. There is a lot of information here, even when some do not play well with others, it's still educational. The AOPA has helped me a lot with getting my medical 4 years ago although it took almost 6 months. The EAA has helped me several times understand the regulation wording.

Scott, SeaReys do just fine tied down outside.

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 12,2011 Viewers | Reply
And you can make a solid sun-hanger in your back yard (if you want to keep it there) for about $5000.
Scott Peters - Jun 12,2011 Viewers | Reply
I was thinking that or an enclosed trailer when I saw the folding wing.

Jeff Arnold - Jun 13,2011 Viewers | Reply
Scott, I purchased Roberta Hegy's georgous Searey in 2002 and it has been kept outside ever since. The paint has weathered and there are some patched holes from a hail storm, but otherwise, it is holding up fine. I believe a Searey is happier being tied on the tarmac and flown regularly that it would be sitting in an enclosed trailer and not flown because it is too much hassle.

    Thanks Jeff.

We need a thread dedicated to regulations specific to LSA and seaplanes...
