On a holiday weekend it can be tough to find shore accommodations. Yum Yum (N7UM) found bedding at the old Katama Aerodrome. The aerodrome is actually a nature preserve. That must really confuse anti-airport extremists! It has been an airport since 1925. The burning and mowing required to keep it open actually preserved a small pocket of prairie habitat that once dominated the northwest portion of the island. Sand-plain grasslands are endangered environments limited to Massachusetts’ coastal islands and Long Island.      Attachments:

Beach on Martha’s island can get pretty pricey. Access to beach can be had for $50,000 per year. Not this beach, though. Squibnocket Beach is for the Kennedy clan and their guests.      Attachments:

Biplanes rides keep the Katama Aerodrome going. Unfortunately the Hysterical Society won’t let them improve the hangar. There are only a few weeks a year to make money. When the president visits, the DHiS makes the place close down and the year is a loss. Not good for the airport economy but at least we can all feel safer.      Attachments:

The bridge across Pocha Pond is notoriously tough to cross after a good party. Run off it and your date can drown. If you are a U.S. Senator, however, you get a pass.      Attachments:

When grounded by bad weather, it’s convenient to be located next to a sub base and museum. This is the USS X-1, the U.S. Navy’s attempt at a midget submarine. It was intended to deliver swimmers and mines into enemy harbors. The submarine was fitted with partial close cycle diesel engines powered by hydrogen peroxide for submerged operation. That experiment ended with a hydrogen peroxide explosion in 1957. It ended its life at the Naval Research Laboratory outfitted with more conventional diesel electric propulsion.      Attachments:
