Description: Smoke on! An air show? Nah, just a trash fire, an inversion holding the smoke just above the trees.

But the smell was good, late on that fall afternoon, flying eastward, back toward the lowlands and civilization, with the low sun making the treetops glow.

Well investigated and documented, Don. Nice colors too.

Dan, I'm always interested in how reality differs from maps, aerial and satellite photos, memory, and so on. In this case--a quest for good seaplane ops in the Virginia mountains--I had studied all the maps and photos I could find and had tried to dredge up my own decade-old memories of the area. And then reality showed them all to be inadequate. In a way, that made the flight all the more fun.

Trash or leaves? Trash doesn't smell nearly as nice as leaves, leaves might be considered trash...like after raking them all day!

Dunno, Steve. It smelled pungent, like dry wood, not foul like garbage, so you're probably right.

Sometimes it's hard to tell. A few months ago I flew over what I assumed was a trash fire--lots of smoke and a wet-rotten smell--but it turned out to be a house fire. All that was left was the foundation and some smoking black, wet wood.

There were other fires as well, including this one with the smoke trailing out for a mile or more. (The horizontal lines are smoke. The round blobby things are smudges on the windscreen.) Attachments:

Steve, don't rake leaves. Blow them! It really isn't that bad if you have the right equipment (I think you probably do) Attachments:

I like the premise Jeff, but if my plane gets out of my hanger it doesn't hang around home too long and the last thing I'm thinking about is the work I left behind..lol
