Description:
New Years day was clear and sunny in central Virginia, so of course I had to go flying. I noticed an airmen for moderate turbulence below 15,000 feet, and the winds aloft forecast for 3,000 was 55 knots. But on the surface there was hardly any breeze at all.
Hm, I thought, that's a steep gradient for 3,000 feet. It sounds like turmoil.
Well, I thought, I'll just go up a little way and if it's too rough I'll come right back down again.
The big bumps didn't begin until about 150 feet, and by then it was too late to land on the runway, so I bumped my way upstairs.
Fortunately, it was relatively smooth between 1650 and 1750, and the wind was only 32 knots there, so I didn't have to come right back down again. (And in any case, I was in no hurry to go back down through that bumpy air.)
But it was a tough day for air-to-anything photography, even at 1700 feet. This is the only steady shot I got.
