Now that's what I'd call an epic SeaRey flight, mate! "Spectacular" justisn't adequate. Those glassy water photos were great. I really like the rocks too.How did the crossings go? That's some serious water. What were the seas like?<!-- >'"><br><font color=red size=6>' or &gt; missing in user HTML. Please fix the HTML.</font> -->

Hi Dan yes it was an epic flight 52 hours all up, and the 26 kts of headwind didn't help the Bass Strait crossing took four hours flying for 210 nautical miles, it sure is nice feeling when you see finally see land again. As for the seas they weren't too bad but still not the place for a landing. The next adventure is to the Daintree in North Queensland in November to witness a total solar eclipse, plan is to fly up over the Great Barrier Reef this is shaping up to be a fantastic trip. Sure would be good if you guys could come down under for the trip.

David, I always wanted to see a Super Petrel in person to compare it to the Searey, They don't have a dealer in the States anymore.<br />Did the Petrel have any advantages and disadvantages from the Searey? Speed? Ramping? Comfort? Build? Size?

Hi Thomas the super Petrel is a nice aircraft, they have similar specs to the SeaRey. This is always going to be hard to do a comparison being a SeaRey owner, but I will give it a go.<br /><br />Advantages..It iis about 10 knots faster, factory built, good vision but not as good as a SeaRey, and it is a very good-looking and well finished aircraft, lightweight and easy to manoeuvre on the ground, manuals gear system seems to work well and tucks nicely into the Hull. Standard engine cowing.<br /><br />Disadvantages.. Not as much luggage space, no flap however this does not seem to affect the performance, I'm not a big fan of the side hatches, sliding canopy on the SeaRey can't be beaten, the SeaRey can handle rough fields and softer beaches, the LSX seats are more comfortable than the super Petrel not to say that the super Petrel is not uncomfortable, the lower wing on the Petrel is very close to the water when taxing on water and easily damaged in rough water.

Did you carry any special../..extra safety equip for the <br />crossing? What about water support ? Just wondering

David Geers - Mar 30,2012   Viewers  | Reply
We carried the normal safety equipment e.g. A spot GPS, smoke flares, sea anchor, EPIRBS and PLBS ect, a little extra water. The distance we travelled did not require a life raft which I doubt we would of been able to fit in anyway. We also set up with Melbourne centre 30 min reporting. We tried several altitudes to avoid the 26Kts headwind we found 500 feet to be the best. I now have quite a large account in the headwind bank, hope I can withdraw a one-day!

Holy smoke, David! That's quite a trip! I've crossed a few of the US Great Lakes in my SeaRey, but they're nothing like 210 miles over open water. Congratulations on those cojones!
