Description: A closer view of the sand mine. This one is big enough to land a SeaRey in--and even get it out again--but I've never tried. (Maybe some weekend when there's no work going on.)

I'm curious too Don about the color of the water. Here's one in
Mid-Florida (5/2012) that
also has the vivid color. Attachments:

Glacial lakes in the north have that turquoise color too. The grinding of rocks under a moving glacier pulverizes them into "rock flour" that hangs in suspension. Reflected sunlight produces that color. Probably fine particles of sand in the mining lakes do the same.<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. Frank, I drove there a few days ago when it was too hot to do anything else. It was past quitting time, but a few guys were still there. One told me that it's pure groundwater in the mine--pure enough to drink, he said. The color varies with the sunlight and the sky cover. I asked if I could land in it. He said no, that they have to keep everyone out because of the liability problem.

Bruce, I've seen that color in glacial snow. Poke an ice axe handle down into the snow and the bottom of the hole looks ethereal blue, just like this water. Attachments:

Here are a few shots from ground level:

Machine
The sand mine is huge! This machine may suggest something of the scale.

Onto
Sand is loaded onto this conveyor and dropped onto the top of the pile.

Out of
Another conveyer removes sand from the bottom of the pile through this tunnel.

No trespassing
The guy I spoke with said that they have to patrol the lake every day to keep the 'trash' out. Attachments:
