Nice shots, Lee.

And what interesting contrasts in flying boat design! It's especially evident in IMG_5137.

Especially so, since Aeroprakt purchased a SeaRey and used it as a basis to design an improved version, their A-24 Viking!
(Too bad PA didn't purchase a Viking

I knew they had a SeaRey to copy, John. But the question is, did they produce a better flying boat weighing less than 1430 lbs that satisfies the FAA's 51% rule, has unobstructed visibility from the cockpit, and is easy to exit when upside down under water?<!-- >'">
' or > missing in user HTML. 'did they produce a better flying boat' - Yes, superior wing and I think the hull is better designed for rough water.

'weighing less than 1430 lbs' - Larry W. suggests it weighs about the same as an LSX.

'satisfies the FAA's 51% rule' - Yes, now available as a 51% 'fast build' Kit.

'has unobstructed visibility from the cockpit' - Yes, Perhaps not quite as good forward but better all around..

'easy to exit when upside down under water' - Yes, same sliding type canopies as the SeaRey.

But then Don, perhaps you left out some important questions

Jeez, John, please don't suggest important questions! This is a family site.

Hi Lee:
Excellent pictures
The all-white paint job on C-GUHL ('sea gull') doesn't belong in the same picture with JIB and PTQ. Sooner or later, I hope to get a few coloured stripes on it to break up the monotony. (g)

I have to admit to a huge adrenalin surge when I looked over at John (he was so close I could see the dimples in his cheeks). Not only is John a great seaplane instructor, he is also a steady hand when it comes to formation flying.

I am looking forward to flying with you guys whenever possible.

Best,
Larry

Hi Don:

The A-24 is now officially accepted and registered as a 'quick-build kit'. It meets the 51% rule requirements under the 'Home Built' ('Experimental' in USA) category.

My A-24 weighed in at a hair over 1000 pounds empty and provides a useful load of just over 650 pounds. As John notes, it has sliding side windows.
So far, some seven A-24's have been landed in water with the gear down and none of them flipped.

As is the case with all things technical, Aeroprakt did have the advantage of being able to review all existing amphibious designs before it put pen to paper. And as one would expect, the company did find ways to 'improve the breed'. That said, it should also be noted that the resulting aircraft is considerably more expensive than is the SeaRey. As far as I am concerned, the SeaRey is an amazing aircraft and well deserves to be the world's most popular amphibian.

Best,
Larry

Hi Don:

The A-24 is now 'settled in', so I will try to get a few long trips in this fall. we shall see. In the mean time, I hope to join John Dunlop in his mid-summer 'Gaggle'. Perhaps you may also be attending?

Best,
Larry
