Description: Our good friend Tommy Crump has been ailing lately and is staying with his sister for a while. She lives on the river, right beside these power lines. The wires are up so high that she rarely notices them. But they give me the willies when I fly close to them. Tommy is a champion hang glider. Once he was flying by and got blown into a wire. He said he thought he was a goner for sure, but managed to free the kite and land safely.

Matt noticed that a crew is working on the tower footings--without getting wet. Attachments:

Hard to tell in that pic, but it looks like there are balls on the wires.....but they don't seem to help much.

Mark, there are about 8 balls on those wires--although the scale is such that they look pretty small when you're flying near them. You can even see them in maps.google.com at 37.309562, -77.095193. The tower being worked on is the southern one.

The towers have strobes in the daytime and flashing red lights at night.

That's interesting, I think that's the way to go. White strobes are the hardest things to focus on at night. I don't do much night flying, but I hate them. Very difficult to determine where the towers are with quick flashes.
