Description:
About 25 miles downstream from the city is Berkeley Plantation, established December 4, 1619. Nowadays it's a museum, but President William Henry Harrison was born there and so was Benjamin Harrison, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. The liftbridge about 2.5 miles to the west is named for Ben. The first Thanksgiving in America was celebrated at Berkeley, a year before the Puritans arrived at Plymouth Rock. And 'Taps' was composed and first performed there in 1962, during the Civil War. http://www.berkeleyplantation.com/history_taps.html
On Wednesday, they were preparing for a grand fete on the 29th, a fund-raiser to help support the annual First Thanksgiving Celebration.
If you look closely, you might see the western end of a 3000 foot turf runway that was in regular use until around 1970. There's a light-colored tree growing at the threshold now, but there's still about 2500 feet usable (as an event parking lot). Search GoogleEarth for Berkeley Plantation to see it from above.

Wow! It would be 'Taps' for your ears if you were there this morning. A band is playing now, and we can hear the bass thumping inside our house, two miles away.
