I'm surprised that the MD DNR allows seaplanes on the Severn River. Sorry
about the game.

Special permission required (esp for AF)? Annapolis seaplane base still active? Who were you talking to on the way in?

Hmmm. Isn't USNA in the DC SFRA which means you'd need either an IFR Flight Plan or Squawk Code with ATC following? And that's just for the airspace, not the river.

The Severn is legal to land on. Filed a SFRA flight plan (does not have to be IFR) and jumped through those hoops. Got flight following at Dover, DE and they eventually handed me off to Potomac who handles the SFRA codes, etc. But, you can just call Potomac with your position and destination and they'll find your flight plan.

Beaching it at USNA? I figured it was easier to say 'I'm sorry' than to ask permission. The MPs came by and thought it was cool...and left us alone. Air Force stunk the joint up, which was the only downer.

I don't know the status of 01MD (Annapolis SPB). It is still listed and I used it as the destination and departure point for the flight plan...but obviously, I did not use their 'facilities'. Perfectly smooth coming in @ 0830....much bumpier with boat traffic on departure @ 1530.

All in all, a smooth operation but you do have to do the SFRA dance.

Chuck, so you did pull it off. Great! Sorry i could not join you, but i flew down to join Don and Lindsey at the Lake Gaston fly in. Yes sad to hear about the Falcons, I will have to avoid my Navy friends on that one. Where did you land between the bridges or down River from the bridge you parked under? You have shamed me into flying into the
Severn Inn across the river for Sunday brunch sometime.

As to MD01 it is on the creek up bay from the Severn River about 3.2 miles from Annapolis. I have checked it out on the ground and it was run down with no real parking or docking spot and way back from the main road. I also was warned the owner may be difficult to deal with. There use to be a SB on the Severn in the 1990s between the bridges. It was called Clements Creek SB. The owner, a USMC aviator, Hunter, made news in the early 1990s getting it officially designated.

As to flying into the DC SFRA. it is a piece of cake. I do it all the time and Potomac Apch has no problem with seaplane ops. Attachments:

Yeah, thanks Rob. I wouldn't have tried it without your advice. The spot we discussed on Google Earth was perfect - if not exactly 'approved' :-) The spots on the North side, by the Severn Inn look quite doable as well.

Just FYI, using 01MD as the destination/ departure point worked fine.

Chuck, just for future ref, when I docked my boat at the Severn Inn years ago, it could get VERY rough there.

Frank you are right about the pier in front of the Severn Inn, but what Chuck was referring to was the
beach at the park on the upper river side of the bridge. It is sheltered from teh traffic and has a firm
beach a couple of SeaReys could easily drive up onto.

Ahh, the park was built after I moved to Florida, I see your point. Thanks.

Or, get on the water just outside SFRA, turn off xponder and step taxi 4 miles.

Chuck Cavanaugh - Oct 09,2013 Viewers | Reply
Yup, Ken, that was my plan B. It was calm and quiet enough that we could have done just that.
