Description: It's been chilly here in central Virginia for the past few days--chilly enough to make the water hard enough to walk on.

The ice was about an inch thick right there. (I was wearing insulated chest waders, and the tide was low enough that they might not have filled up if I had fallen through the ice.)

If I can find my skates I'll give them a try in the morning.

This much ice is unusual hereabouts, below the fall line, where the James River spreads out on its way to the Atlantic and, though still fresh, is affected by the tides. At first I thought the ice went out only to where the snow fell on it last night. No! By late this afternoon it went all the way to where the shiny part starts. What looks like riffled water is frozen. It was dead calm when I took this photo.

That island on the left is 2000 feet from shore, and the far shore beyond it is almost two miles. Attachments:

Haha, Don! What's the problem? Makes it way easier to do that 180 on your beach.

Hope you're well.

Thank you Don! This is my favorite winter experience--in photographs!

Chilly again last night. (It's 3 right now.) And the river is almost completely frozen, all the way across. The dark-ish patch just this side of the island is wet. All the rest on this side of it is hard. The old timers hereabouts say it's very unusual. Attachments:

Don, Can't tell from the photos, but do you have a bubbler going around your
pilings?

Don Maxwell - Jan 31,2014 Viewers | Reply
Nope, Frank--although that would have been a good idea this winter. In normal years the river may freeze for a few feet out from shore as the tide goes out, but usually thaws with the next incoming tide. So nobody worries about protecting the pilings. Until now.

But it's going to be in the 50s in the daytime for the next several days, so the ice will probably be gone by Saturday.

But I found my skates today, so if the ice is reasonably solid in the morning I'll see if they still work.

    Here's an update--I went skating!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U5vmWP0_JmE&feature=youtu.be

I would have skated yesterday, but couldn't find my skates in time. Unfortunately, Carol gave hers away long ago, and she lamented it today.

It got up to 50 today, and the forecast for tomorrow is 54--so the ice will probably be too thin and rotten to skate on. (Unless I can get up really early.)

Pretty cool Don, and pretty good for a 40-year layoff! WUFFWDFS. You are
brave!

(Wheels up for flying wheels down for Skating)

The ice is completely gone now, Wayne. But when flying yesterday, we saw a few sad floes heading down river toward Jamestown Island.

I love outdoor skating, especially on large ice--lakes and rivers. Near where I grew up in Cleveland Heights, Ohio, there was a huge marshy area that would freeze into ice-paths extending for miles. Kids could skate on it all day, amongst grasses and shrubs, without passing over the same place twice.

Don local Annapolitians make use of water vibrators to protect their
piers and in water boat from ice damage. Google winter boating prep

PS - let us please keep the sexual jokes/comments to a minimum ;-)

Thanks, Rob. Bubblers and vvvvibrators do help keep ice from harming pilings, but substantial ice here is so rare, thin, and fleeting that as far as I know no one in this area had ever had any damage from it. This winter is an anomaly--not that I'm at all unhappy about it! I'd love to skate here every winter. (If only the temp would go from warm to icy overnight, so we wouldn't have to put up with cold, wet water.)

Have fun, Don! But as it warms up, stay on the DRY side of the ice! :-)
