Description: Winter is blowing its last for this year today. (I hope!) 18G32 when I took this picture.

The SPA flag didn't winter too well. It reminds me of a poem by Ezra Pound (Sorry if the language bothers you; it's art.)

Ancient Music
Ezra Pound, 1912

Winter is icummen in,
Lhude sing Goddamm.
Raineth drop and staineth slop,
And how the wind doth ramm!
Sing: Goddamm.

Skiddeth bus and sloppeth us,
An ague hath my ham.
Freezeth river, turneth liver,
Damn you, sing: Goddamm.

Goddamm, Goddamm, 'tis why I am, Goddamm,
So 'gainst the winter's balm.

Sing goddamm, damm, sing Goddamm.
Sing goddamm, sing goddamm, DAMM.

(It's a parody of the old English song, 'Sumer is Icumin In.' See: http://www.bl.uk/learning/timeline/item100326.html and http://www.recmusic.org/lieder/get_text.html?TextId=58153 )

But I finally got in some good flying a couple of days ago and could see that this part of Virginia is just about to green up.<br /><br />And the ospreys showed up yesterday, back from vacationing in the Caribean and are already checking out their nesting place on the end of our pier.<br /><br />I haven't checked out the water temperature lately, but it's well above freezing now. (Not yet comfortable for swimming, so I landed on it very carefully.)      Attachments:

Art is ubiquitous, like it or not. This place is across the James from us, about 2 miles away. The left part is the residence; the right, a museum of early twentieth century Russian painting. (Some people will do almost anything for a tax break.) Their schooner was somewhere else. Tsk.      Attachments:

Aw, what the heck. Here's a modern group singing 'Sumer Is Icomen In' in five parts: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ptTiPaO45s">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ptTiPaO45s</a><br /><br />And here's a version of the score: <a href="http://www-personal.umich.edu/~msmiller/sumercanon.html">http://www-personal.umich.edu/~msmiller/sumercanon.html</a><br /><br />And why has this song survived for at least 800 years? Well, maybe because it's fun to sing as a round, and it gives hoity-toity folks an excuse to say fart in polite society. And there's that pesky cucu, too--the cuckoo. The word cuckold comes from cucu, apparently because the cuckoo lays eggs in another bird's nest. So when you sing the song, you're celebrating, um, doing what comes naturally.<br /><br />(There's no end to connections. It all comes naturally: <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnwd-_Hk20Y">http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lnwd-_Hk20Y</a> Now it's your turn.)
