Wow! You've been digging deep into your photo archive, Russ.

Can you believe that event convinced me to buy a kit? Well, okay a second demo ride with Kerry had something to do with it, too. But watching Jon's gear collapse and the almost immediate repair that the SeaRey community participated in convinced me that I just HAD to have one of those planes. And I had my own gear collapse in the same place about ten years later.

Ahhh....the ol' hydraulic gear / round upright days.

Jon took me for a ride a couple of years later at the Garners party. On that trip, he showed me a hocky stop (advanced maneuver to
be sure) and on the second or third demo, we broke a float support. Flew back to Garners and had it replaced in 20 minutes.
Another example of easy field repair.

So glad I could provide some amusement for the crowd. The best part was when Bret Smith turned to me and asked “did my fat ass
cause that?”

For those who didn't know Bret, he was about 6' 5".

Bret, showed up at my door for the fly in wanting to get a ride. I had my old 80 hp. Rotax at the time so I was hopping someone with a 914 would show up and could give him a ride. The guy on the left in this photo was Dan Smith who also died hitting cables while flying his Searey in the Florida Panhandle.      Attachments:

Gotta love that mombo IVO Magnum prop. Those were the days.

Dan Smith had endurance, though. He survived the wires' first attempt to kill him and rebuilt the SeaRey. Unfortunately, they got him on the second try.
