Description: Heading north on the Kissimmee River it is apparent the Corpse of
Engineers is busy undoing what it did so expensively in the past. It
is transforming a man-made waterway back into the river it was
before they "improved it". The Corpse converted 103 miles of
meandering river into a 56 mile long , 300' wide, 30' deep ditch.
According to the Southwest Florida Water Management District
(SWFMD, or "Swift Mud" to Floridians), the canal wiped out a river
ecosystem and replaced it with five stagnant ponds. Now that right
there is classic deadhead engineering.

In 1962 The Corpse of Engineers converted the Kissimmee River to a ditch. It took them 9 years to
change the river into the C-38 canal.

Congress decided in 1992 that the environmental degradation caused by the ditch had to be
addressed. The Corpse got money to start studying the restoration. It took them seven years to
figure out they should fill the ditch and let the water return to its natural flow. They started de-
construction of the canal in 2001. Their plan was to stretch the project out as long as Congress and
Swift Mud would pay for it. The plan was to be done by 2020.

Right.

The restoration has cost more than a billion dollars. So far. (I know. Chump change for the g-
men.) It seems to me the Corpse should have to pay for restoration out of its budget instead of just
getting a bunch more taxpayer dollars to fix its mess. I do admit, though, the new/old river looks a
lot better than the canal.

(No, this is not a political rant. It is just a continuing personal vendetta against the Corpse.)

In some places the old canal is almost natural looking these days. Makes it bit tougher for seaplanes,
but more worthwhile for sightseeing when you do set down on it in SeaRey. Unfortunately the Corpse
has decided some areas are now off-limits for boats. I suspect that applies to flying boats too. A lot of
boaters have figured out that the restrictions are not so restrictive if the Corpse can't catch them. The
Keystone Cops are an elite unit compared to the Corpse. Just saying.

The old canal meets the new/old river east of the Avon Park bombing range. Instead of watching the
Corpse fill ditches, the bombing range proved to be a lot more interesting.

Looks like some of the troops prefer off-roading to following the designated path. I would too if I had
one of their cool machines.

Ok, so who put a Hooters across the street from the mosque? That is so politically incorrect. And, of
course, there is no bomb damage on the Hooter's building. Go figure.

So who gave the Air Force a Navy plane for a target? I knew there was an inter service rivalry, but
bombing the Navy seems a little extreme.

Now who would do this to a fine old Sabre? Back when Sabretooth planes roamed the plains, Col.
Grumpy trained here, sitting in a bunker shooting at "drones" in what was supposed to simulate his B-
47 gunner's position. He said he didn't shot anything down, but he was a bomber pilot. Maybe he
wasn't supposed to. Hopefully this wasn't his work.

It's not much of an airport for land planes. I have to say, though, the Air Force has better targets at
Avon Park than the Navy does at Pinecastle.

The bomber pilots at Avon Park have a better win record too. One night during WWII practice bombing
went astray and the nearby town of Frostproof was pummeled with inert bombs. One landed in the
mayor's backyard. He promptly called the Army Air Force and surrendered. I hope he has been
released from the POW camp by now.

She's following my trends, Jeff: adding weight with age. She's added one hundred pounds with the heavier engine and structure.
She's no more fun to fly, but maybe she's a little more robust with more margin for pilot error. That's what I tell Ann when she asks
about why I've spent the time, effort and money for the modifications over the past 22 years.

Though the summer storms were not fully developed back at the end of May, there were enough angry
cumulonimbo's to make it necessary to race back to base. Even with the hurried ending, it was an
excellent day of SeaReying, surveying the strange lands and waters of Florida.

I don't know, Dennis. That sounds political to me. And it would cut into my SeaRey flying, so, no thanks. "If nominated, I will fly to
Naples. If elected, I will hide in the Everglades. If extradited, I will not serve anything but swamp cabbage."
