Description: Sunrise brought with it a way out. I could fly off to Kavieng with
SuRi’s helicopter. It was headed there for fuel. This was a
particularly sad time to be leaving, with the SeaRey broken and
spectacular flying weather wasted.

All that beautiful water going to waste with no seaplane in sight.      Attachments:

SuRi’s helicopter was nice, but it’s no SeaRey. We had to fly over some beautiful spots with no good
way to explore them at water level.

Despite my grousing about the helicopter, I was sorry to see my departure airport ahead. Kavieng,

Apparently one of the agents felt sorry for me. Instead of booking me a hovel in town, she sent me
to an island resort. Or maybe it was just another way to get rid of me. The only way to get to there
was by boat. Nusa Island

    What! No A/C!

At least the view outside was cool.

"But what about mosquitoes and malaria?" I whined to the Aussie owner.

"There's a mosquito net if you're bothered, mate. I've lived here for 10 years and its rarely a
worry."

Rarely being the operative word. But the net shut down any air circulation. I'd just have to take my
chances.

I may have had a quick nap. No bug bites. When I awoke it looked like there was foam out in the
channel. Not dirty foam. Just flat, shallow sand. "Aha! Maybe I can escape across the shallow
channel at low tide!"

What to do with a day to standby for my flight out? Take a hike through the jungle! (There was
only one early flight out to get me back to Port Moresby.) What could possibly go wrong!

There were a few breaks in the jungle to catch a glimpse of the sea. That was the only navigational
clue to the jungle trek.

Pools of water in the jungle might indicate a sea not far away, hidden by the dense jungle.      Attachments:

When I got to the sea, it was rough going. The beach was left behind. Razor sharp rocks stood
between me and the water.

Falling would be a painful prospect. Miles away from the resort through a modestly impenetrable
jungle with no one in sight, there might have been a painful overnight stay. Or, a slow bleeding out.
But, other than that, no worries.

The hazardous hiking was worth the view. Waves smashing against the rocks blew up in a brilliant
blast as they met the shore.

My hike ended back at the resort with no new worries as daylight was extinguished. Time to go
home and figure out a fix for the SeaRey. Repair in place at SuRi's next stop, or air freight a new
wing? A decision for another day…

Dan, since I'm in the freight business, then I must take it upon myself to personally deliver one to the boat! It'll be a tough task, but hey somebody's gotta do it!
We really do enjoy the pics and the stories. Stay safe out there.

Turns out it was faster to fix it than fly a new one in, Paul. Next time I’ll check with you on the in-person delivery option!
