Description: The next morning we arrived a bit late. The Captain wanted to get

was even anchored.

If only we could find an anchorage then the SeaRey could be freed!      Attachments:

Our new anchorage was much closer to the active volcano (Ulwan) our aviation inspector had
warned us about.

My test flight showed me the area was not the pristine remote jungle it appeared from the water.
Nearby there was a serious logging operation.

Far enough away? Maybe. The volcano was looking pretty quiet though the top was obscured by
cloud (not smoke). Not that anyone cared. No one wanted to fly over and check it out.

We were warned not to swim in the area because of crocodiles. The little canoes that came around
SuRi didn’t look crocodile-proof to me. They were sometimes accompanied by several dogs,
swimming alongside. The local guide said the crocs take some of the kids every year. Dogs too, I
presume.

Despite the warnings, I couldn’t stay away. Late in the day when the Captain said he wanted to see
the top of the volcano, that was all the excuse I needed. Official reasoning: a close survey was
necessary to see if it was safe to stay overnight. Whatever!

The latest eruption of Ulwan started at the end of June. Surrounding communities were evacuated
due to hazard from volcanic dust (11,000 people total). The Hoskins airport in Kimbe was closed
(too late for the commuter jet that landed there in deep dust before dawn).

When I got back to the boat, the Captain invited the new chief stewardess to go for the volcano tour.
She needed a Searey experience to sell the concept to the guests. There would be no wasting of
volcanic viewing opportunities!

On June 26, 2019 Ulwan volcano exploded throwing ash up to 63000’ (particulates ejected above
38000’ have a cooling effect on the planet). The full scale subplinian eruption measured 4 on the
Volcanic Explosivity Index (maximum of 8, Mt. St. Helens was a 5). Aviation color code: red (major
eruption).

Ulwan is the highest volcano along the 1000 km Bismarck Arch stretching from Rabaul (eastern end)
to Wewak in the west with 21 active volcanoes. Nearby Manam exploded two days later with
magma flowing from the summit to the sea. PNG is a naturally violent place!

It was a race to get back to SuRi before dark. There would be no more Ulwan tours as SuRi was
moving further away overnight.

After the seaplane was parked, one of the agents stopped me in one of the passageways. “I see
you’re taking crew for flights. The guests have to be the top priority.”

That just struck me wrong. The guests had shown absolutely no interest in going. Was I to sit idly
by? I replied, “No, that’s wrong. The safety of the guests, crew and boat are the top priority. Try to
remember that.”

He turned and walked away without further discussion. That was to be continued later, in my
absence apparently

Looking at this at first, it appeared you were flying it like a kite behind the boat!
