Overnight SuRi moved back to Kokopo to allow guests to disembark for an early morning adventure hike up the volcano. Rather than ride back in the shuttle vans, the helicopter and seaplane were dispatched to the Rabaul Yacht Club to retrieve them.
That generated a lot of excitement at the Club (a place mostly populated by derelict fishing boats). The locals kept their distance until a child ventured out to investigate the seaplane. He was eventually recalled by his mother but not before getting danger close. I assured his mother that he would not be infected. It’s possible that wasn’t a lie.

After discharging my passenger, rather than take the seaplane back onboard the Captain sent me flying solo back across St. George’s Channel to the Duke of York Islands to await the boat’s arrival. I could see storm clouds out in the channel approaching the islands. Fortunately I knew there was a safe harbor with friendly folks to be had out there, so I didn’t object.

There was plenty of time for sightseeing along the way out. Half way between Kokopo and The Duke of York Islands lay Pigeon Island. Were it not for the approaching storms it would offer a fine spot to investigate.
Well, the storms and the fact that all the islands are owned by some group that would likely want a rental payment. I wasn’t in the mood for diplomatic negotiations. I’d rather be flying as long as I could stay clear of the wind and rain.

One leaned way out to grab more sun and is now left alone and exposed. Sigh. That seems to be the way it is for people too.

Passing Palakuvur Island I wasn’t in a hurry because of SuRi. It would take hours for the boat to catch up. All I had to do was beat the rain to my beach sanctuary.
As it turns out, weather in the channel is a bit different than for the big islands. A screen capture from Windy shows why. Oddly enough it shows another area of higher winds that seemed insignificant at the time, but that become painfully important later.

The islands had some pretty impressive barriers protecting against the pounding waves. (Kerawara Island and Mioko Reef)

In front of the storm the weather looked pretty good. SuRi was out there plodding towards our meeting place. Ulu Island

The missionary hospital on Ulu, Watnabara Mission, Mauke Plantation. It was established by Methodist missionary William D. Oakes in 1933 with a school, hospital and palm plantation. Timetable for the school children? This is how it was described: 0600 to 0630 “physical jerks†0630 to 0800 lessons 0900 to 1045 lessons Afternoons: garden work and housebuilding (students grew their own food, and on Wednesday and Fridays they worked in the “Big Garden†which grew food for sell) Planted 3000 coconut trees for the production of copra Saturday afternoon was when they had time off It is said that Reverand Oakes knew of the impending war but refused to leave. He was captured by the Japanese and did not survive the war, but his work continues unabated.

The storm front was looming larger and the wind was increasing. Time to look for sanctuary. It was easier getting past the coral heads before the wind and rain arrived.

This time the Reverend Johnson was able to persuade some of the braver youngsters to take a closer look. “They’ve never been this close to an airplane in their lives, and they’ve never seen a seaplane.†At first they were scared of it, but a few warmed to it for a few brief moments, rewarded by being welcomed back as heros to their admiring fellows.

The local boats were narrow canoes with outriggers. They had no trouble navigating through the wind, rain or coral heads.

That's an especially interesting shot, Dan. The airplane is a quite new and factory-made (one might almost call it machine-made) version of a flying boat kit. The non-flying boat appears to be hand-made and built from ancient plans--or the idea of a plan--probably by its operator. One travels the world in two dimensions; the other, in three. From there it's easy to imagine other similarities and differences of the objects, their operators, and the families and societies the operators and designers each grew up in.
Oooo! My head hurts now. (Not really. But it doesn't know whether to feel happy or sad.)

It made me happy, Don, to see such variety coexisting, and even cooperating! There may be hope for the world despite everything. Even better my head didn’t hurt because the coconut fell in my hands, not on my head. (It was given to me as a refreshing gift while I was waiting for the floating chieftain’s hut, SuRi.)
