Description: ON the first sunny day here in... maybe a millennium, somebody sent a pair of turboprops overhead, perhaps to check on what the James River has brought us as a gift of the Great Rain Dog. Or looking for drogados. Or Russian spies, put ashore from submarines in the shipping channel. Or whatever.

They made two passes, but I couldn't find the camera in time for a good shot. This one is cropped from a long tele shot when they were probably 10 miles away, heading east in the general direction of the Norfolk Naval Air Station.

This is the actual shot I got, at 60:1 optical zoom. The photo above is cropped from it.

They may have been Northrup Grumman E-2C Hawkeyes, the closest thing to seaplanes I've seen all week. In this video, the last takeoff shows an E-2C shivering and shaking as it goes to takeoff power, with the tail assembly and the radar antenna housing shuddering very much like the tail of a Searey at takeoff. Of course, a Searey wouldn't need the catapult.

and the river taketh away. Or in this case, the river taketh and bringeth again. That chunky looking log is about 2.5 feet in diameter. The river left the car wheel+tire+wheelcover assembly and moved it farther up the beach. Maybe it's full of contraband...

I had a ride in a B25 last year courtesy of onbe of my kids. When we were on the runway before take off the tail shook so much and the fuselage was so flexible I wondered how the plane had lasted so long!

The local weather pundits are bragging today that this has been the wettest year since 1889 in the Richmond VA area. Twelve more inches of rain before the end of December will make it the wettest year ever recorded here, but they say that's not likely. It's probably also one of the worst years for debris in the river--and on the beaches. I had to dodge lots of flotsam yesterday when landing and taking off.

Aw, that's terrible, Brian--a whole city floating in that water!
