Description:
Old Col. Grumpy was prone to saying, ""Never put an experimental engine on an experimental airplane."" Ha! With a new Rotax 915iS on an experimental SeaRey, I bet he would fly it too. He'd grumble and say, ""Never fly the A model of anything,"" then go out to fly his first model SeaRey with an A hull. It's called ""Situational Awareness, "" Colonel. The ""situation"" is the need to fly and the ""awareness"" is you will if you can!
(Just in case his sayings came back to haunt, however, I stayed over water. You never know when the hull will overheat.)

Flying over Tallahassee's Lake Jackson you never know if there will be any water. It's prone to leaking out into sinkholes to become a dry praire.

Safe on the water? Ha! Glancing just over the port wing I spotted a big log floating closer to the airplane. Moving? There's no current in the lake! It was a huge gator! In Alabama? Yep. And it wasn't no little scared Florida gator. No sirree, this was a big boy and he was gonna see if the SeaRey was available for a lunch date. At the risk of getting muddy feet into the show plane I boarded from the passenger side.

Nice story and photos as usual Dan. One question and one comment: Is this airplane destined for the Bonefish Grille? And thanks for the remembrance of ""Ole Col. Grumpy"". Loved the stories from you about him. I only met him twice: once he wouldn't give me the time of day, the second he treated me like his long lost brother. But anybody that flies B-47's for SAC has earned some slack.

I'm thinking that fish was what was attracting the alligator, Frank. I'm going to suggest another placard: ""WARNING! GRAPHICS NOT APPROVED BY FAA. MAY ATTRACT VICIOUS ATTACK ALLIGATORS!

Nearing Atlanta as the Chattahoochee River got shallow the only possible refuge in case of hull overheating was behind a dam.

The old Danville Grain Elevator was consumed by Kentucky Lake when it was dammed in the 1940's (west of Stewart, TN in Kentucky Lake).

A not-so-super place to end a super day with a super plane. No one around. No transportation. No Uber. No taxi. No hotel shuttle. With a super sigh and a short hop over to Paducah, KY it was all super. Metropolis, IL

You'd think Metropolis would have a super-duper airport. But maybe you'd really have to be a man of steel to stay there overnight. Anyway, Dan, your photos are super! And the Searey looks great, too. Do you feel the extra 20 hp, compared to a 914?

The simple though nuanced answer is that you can feel the potential. Development of the prop control software to capture all the extra horsepower is an ongoing process.
