To far away from the surface Dan. You can't hand paddle home on a float plane. Plus, it's fun to watch a float plane pilot flinch on his first SeaRey landing. Beautiful picture !

The pictured airplane is Tavares based Jonas Brothers' seaplane training Cub with a 100 hp conversion. My friend and neighbor SeaRey builder Peter Magnuson and his instructor stopped for lunch. Peter's SeaRey received its airworthiness certificate last week and Peter received his SES rating from Don Laughlin yesterday. All Peter needs now is a tailwheel endorsement and then he can make that magic first flight.
I have flown over this restaurant a few times looking for a SeaRey beaching spot, but all I saw was weeds and mud.

The docking was a thing of beauty, Bruce. Unfortunately the days of beaching at Boondocks is just a memory. Back in the day the guys from Gator Field cleared out the weeds, put in a psp ramp, and gaggles of light amphibians pulled up for leisurely lunches. It's all grown up now from lack of interest. Congratulations to Peter and his instructor on a nicely executed graduation exercise!

Back when I had my Husky on floats, Dave, the chief pilot for Wipline joined me in Florida for some advanced training. He gave me a good workout in float stuff and after we finished I offered him a ride in the SeaRey.
He was hesitant and said, "I don''t fly experimental aircraft."
I was okay with that. "It''s different," I replied, "but in a good kind of way."
He thought about that for a minute, then said, "Well, okay. It looks like a nice airplane."
Off we went to nearest lake. Though the landing looked completely different than what I had just been doing I managed through sheer luck to slide smoothly onto the water. I was feeling pretty smug about that when I turned to see him pale as a sheet. With a look of terror staring me in the eyes he shrilly asked, "Are we sinking?"
Just in case I looked past him to see what he had been looking at. There was the water, just inches below the gunwales. Just like always in a SeaRey. I laughed and said, "Not to worry. It''s as close to sinking as it always is."
I suppose for float pilots having several feet between themselves and the water is a comfort factor. If you like the water, though, closer is better.
(You should have seen the terror in his eyes when I did a step taxi turn from downwind to takeoff .....I don''t know if he''ll ever get in another flying boat!)

""I don't fly experimental aircraft.""
Glad Orville and Wilbur didn't have that attitude.
