Description:
She pulled her mother out of the crowd directly to the airplane. ""I want to go flying,"" she announced. It was more of a pronouncement actually. It could have been a demand. If it was, it was a sweet demand, delivered with an impish smile.
Her request didn't fit my mission profile. My task today was to take the squeamish for gentle flights during the Searey Employee, Family and Friends Appreciation Day event. My passengers were those deemed by the air marshal to be unsuitable for aerial adventure flights with Kerry or business-like flights with Adam. Only the air marshal was nowhere in sight when this young lady marched up.
Most of my passengers were reluctant. Many had to be induced with promises of a slow boat ride around the lake first. This one was clearly exceptional.
There was no reluctance, no hysterics. No shrill of excitement. Nothing but a calm appreciation bestowed with her Mona Lisa smile.
After a gentle introduction to flying, I tried to make the quick trip measure up to her high expectations. ""Would you like to go hunting for alligators?""
""Sure.""
Fortunately for the alligators, there were none to be found. I suspect they were hiding from her.
Maybe she should have flown with Kerry. I'm skeptical, however, that even his aerial ballets would daunt her. She was as cool and as calm as they come.
Look out world. She's coming for you.

Not everyone was excited about the prospects of flying. My favorite ending is where the heroine conquers her fears and is smiling in triumph when the engine shuts down.
Her courage was inspiring. Her reluctant brother came running up for his turn. "If she can do it...."

Not everyone could be convinced that flying was a prudent activity. Some were just happy boating. Maybe next time?

Sometimes the introduction to flying boats just floating was enough to change minds. This one finally gave me two thumbs up for flight. You can see by her eyes, however, there is just a bit of reservation waiting to be over-flown. In the end, it was for her.

Hi Dan there is nothing more rewarding than taking someone up for their first flight, as this will be something they will remember the rest of their life. We did approximately 20 Make A Wish flights on our around Australia adventure, which to me was the most rewarding part of our trip. Flying seaplanes is about sharing the adventure, so encourage everyone to take up the cause. Well done Dan!

Wonderful Dan. I can see her in an F-22 in a few years.

The best part of flying is passing on the ""grin"". You are a ""grin maker"".

Outstanding Dan. Absolutely F-22 material. Just sending a neighborhood girl off to the USAF Academy. Got a huge hug when she got accepted and then her mom gave me one too! Like I had anything to do with it!

Extraordinary looking child, Dan. She looks about 30 years old--no, maybe 5 or 6. Or... very much herself.

A great story Dan! And well written. You should consider a blog of these type of stories. Reminded me of the pleasure I had when I was a college kid and volunteered to drive a van for a group of blind bowlers. Yep, they were legally blind and they consistently scored in the 200's! As a 20's something kid, I learned more from them about how ""to see"" life than I did in the 4 years in the classroom. That young lady's smile and those kids enthusiasm says it all and is a reminder of why we do what we do as pilots. Thanks for sharing!
