Hey Don, while I was watching a Google ad for the Super Petrel popped up. Weird.
Any concerns about water temp? 34 degrees, I assume you had your immersion suit on?

No immersion suit, Chuck, but was extra careful--and had shoes on.

Rats. Sorry, John, it's the music--"Summertime," by the Jamies. I own a legal copy of the recording and have just now tried to convince YouTube to allow it, but don't know if that will work. It's apparently okay in the States so far, even on iOS devices. I'd remove the music track, but then it would just be another water landing video. Here's a very lo-res version of the 1080p original:

I bet you're happy Don, while it wasn't that freezing cold down here the flying days were limited. Spring started a few day ago when I noticed the bugs starting to bloom and the grass needed cutting.

John, I've just been admiring Loch Gill in your video of flying there on St. Patrick's Day. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aSJpPG1y3uw&feature=youtu.be ) What a lovely place--especially for SeaRey flying!

Yes Don, we have had a couple of weeks of very flyable weather - a bit grey at times, but hardly any wind. I also got quite a bit of glassy water practice. Added some footage to Youtube - Its a pity the battery in the camera gave up so soon - I managed some reasonably good landings once I got a few runs in. (my story, and I'm sticking to it !). ( https://youtu.be/52zXqndxSPs ) See from approx 2.00 onwards
Ireland is a really great place for seaplanes - our waters are mostly public and with the exception of a few ""crankies"" I have been welcomed in most lakes to date. I get a great thrill out of my Searey and have lots of footage which I cannot post publicly ! Sample from dropbox - https://www.dropbox.com/s/6jfioraj5un6656/LoughGill14022014-ColinShort.mp4?dl=0
All visitors welcome - at current exchange rates (USD/Euro), its a real good time for you guys to visit.

John, are there any special restrictions on seaplanes in Ireland?
In the US, the basic rule everywhere is the same as for landplanes: keep at least 500 feet from persons, vehicles, man-made structures, etc.--and my favorite clause, ""except when necessary for takeoff or landing."" That's the only national rule I know of. Unfortunately, some states restrict seaplane ops. And some waterways are closed to seaplanes, but most of those are also closed to power boats. Otherwise, if a waterway is open to shipping, it's also probably open to seaplanes.

Our 500ft rule in Irl is a bit more restrictive in that we must fly 500ft above the surface (including water) except when landing/Takeoff. I have fallen foul of the authorities but challenged them on landing & takeoff rule by invoking the get-out clause ""nothing herein shall compromise safety"". I argued a that a close examination of the ""landing area"" is a necessity for a safe landing i.e. floating debris or underwater obstructions. As you see from my dropbox video, i conduct extensive surveys of the lake surface before descending. (I avoid flying below 500ft over land in Ireland - OK in England and France. US rule is same as UK. We have a few town councils who introduce bye-laws to prevent water activity for certain vehicles (Jet skis, powerboats) but none specifically for seaplanes. However, that does not stop some threatening me with the jetski rule.
