The occasion was to replace Buck's left Bimini Top fitting, which had broken when he was doing a splash-and-go behind Lindsay and got caught in Lindsay's wake turbulence. (Yes, Seareys really do produce wake turbulence: beware.) The fitting is a sacrificial part, intended to break and therefore save more expensive parts from breaking, so Buck was carrying a spare. Here's Buck lining up parts and Keith manning the 3/16th drill:

Inside the hangar. It used to be a horse exercise building. Keith's Cobra (kitcar) is outside the frame to the left.

Looks like it was a lot of fun Don and Keith's got a beautiful place. Searey's do produce a prettying good wake if your get in the right spot behind them. Kerry and I were doing some formation flying when he pulled out in front of me and I got hit by his wake, it rolled me hard enough to wake me up. This is why you need to be very careful when flying close to your buddy's.

John Denton got his BFR check ride with Richard Johnson CFI Monday he's know legal after we flew off the remainder of the 40 test flights last weekend so his beautiful blue LSX is add to the fleet. John's not much for gabbing on a website but I'm working on it. His LSX was built by the shop and a lot of the finish was done personally by Kerry and Angle. I'll do a bit on it in following days with photos but it is the best flying Searey I've ever flown....

We were both on step in smooth conditions. I had landed to his right and slightly behind. His Searey was producing a nice small wake that looked inviting to cross for practice. As I crossed behind wings level on a diagonal my right wing suddenly raised more than I could compensate with full aileron until the roll softly stopped, but the plane would not level until out from behind his aircraft. It wasn*t until after several more splashes on two different rivers that I noticed paint missing from my left float. The float was still straight down in position, but I could see that the top of the support tube had separated from the wing strut and rotated several inches aft from the wind drag. In all it made for a fun learning experience. Flying with fellow Searey pilots, meeting new friends at their beautiful turf field with a home, and splashing almost fresh water in January in VA. I had expected transient turbulence off his wing tips, but hadn*t appreciated the magnitude of water effect on his wing*s downwash.

Part of Don Laughlin's training is practical advice, such as to carry extra breakaway fittings for the floats. While I have not needed one (yet), my onboard tool kit contains four, each predrilled and labelled for a specific location.

And the extra breakaway fittings need to be pre-drilled. They aren't much good out of the box.

I thought that's what the duct tape is for.

Note to self: put some duct tape in plane tool bag.

If one stores the plane tool bag in the forward hatch, store a Phillips Head Screw driver someplace else.

Correct. Screwdriver & two 3/8 wrenches in side pocket - in cast the fitting only slipped out and didn't break. Come to think of it, I might as well put the stupid fitting in the pocket too!!
