Description: A few months ago the Virginia Commonwealty University's Rice Center installed a smart buoy in the James River. It reports lots of useful info for Seaplane pilots, including wind direction and velocity, gusts, air and water temperature, salinity (always essentially 0), tide height (in respect to a datum, not actual depth), and other info.

Even better is to download the free Smart Buoys iPhone app, which also gives the reports of several other smart buoys in and near the Chesapeake Bay.

    The Rice Center buoy is about a mile from the Taj Mahouse, directly across the river. Here's the view from there. (Photo take a few days earlier.)
