Don't want to step on anyone's toes, but I thought that I would just throw this out in the air. Anyone who has attended any of the georgian gaggles, can tell you that they are a blast. Perhaps some of the returning pilots might want to see Ontario in a different way. Maybe we could stay at a place like this. 4 days and 4 nights all inclusive ( 3 meals a day ) for $595 per person, total. We could fly to Sparrow lake, Lake Simcoe and many more interesting places.
Again, it's just a thought, so we'll see if anyone else might be interested. There is an airport very close, and we can park at the beach in the day and enjoy a few late evening flights, then return to the airport to tie down for the night. www.severnlodge.on.ca
BTW, this place is at the mouth of the trent severn waterway near big chute, we actually flew over this on one of our sorties, so we could still fly some of the previous missions over Georgian Bay, if we want to. We can tie our planes off at their huge docks as well.

Looks like a great place to meet- I could even have a place to fix the bird in the water and still have a coctail
Would love to see 20 seareys crowding the bay

Rudy Wolfs - Jan 24,2007 Viewers | Reply
Nice spot - i have stayed there for a wedding...

Not sure it will fit more than a few seareys and i bet when push comes to shove - the other tenants will want access to their beach!

I thought we had some basic Gaggle rules like 'no night flying' - it might be worth getting a consensus on core gaggle constraints and activities and work out from there.

What is the projected date for the event?

Bob Toerner - Jan 26,2007 Viewers | Reply
Looks good to me!!!! When do we leave?

Kevin D'Angelo - Jan 26,2007 Viewers | Reply
Would we be able to moor or anchor some birds off shore - ? is it protected enough?
Dave Lima - Jan 26,2007 Viewers | Reply
Kevin, yes we can. This place is in a sheltered bay off just off the trent severn waterway. Remember this is just a suggestion, there could be other places that would suit the group as well.

Hate to be an old poop but has anyone thought about maybe a norther US gaggle alternate years? Lots of US Rey drivers just south. Maybe Keven D can put us in his back yard The finger lakes, Wine country, Thousand Islands Just thinking. In my area we could all use the grass strip I fly out of. Some seaplane group up St Laurance way does alternate Canada / US annual gaggles. They claim it gets lots of attendance. Just thinking.

Great idea Tom! I nominate you, Kevin and Don to organize!

Eric Batterman - Feb 13,2007 Viewers | Reply
I second the nominations. Great idea.

Don Maxwell - Feb 13,2007 Viewers | Reply
It's Tom's inspiration--he should have the privilege of bringing it to life! Kevin, too. (I'm inherently incapable of organizing anything.)

But I do think it's a good idea. The finger lakes aren't as stunning as the Georgian Bay, but they're pretty in their own right, and there are probably lots of interesting places to fly to--in addition to the Glenn Curtiss Museum at Hammondsport. That's only a few miles south of Penn Yan (KPEO), which might work as a staging area.

Other parts of North America need SeaRey Gaggles, too. Not everyone is able to travel the long distances to Georgian Bay or Florida every year, or to commit large amounts of cash (especially if the adventure isn't attractive to all family members).

A few other possibilities:

+ The Northwest, around Seattle and Vancouver--lots of water and terrific scenery.

+ The upper Midwest--the Mississippi River and the lakes in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and maybe even those north of Winnipeg. There's great camping around Lake Superior, too.

+ The mid-Atlantic area, with the Chesapeake Bay, NASA's Langley, First Flight Airport, the blimp hangar, and several large rivers.

+ The TVA area--plenty of good waterways there.

+ The Gulf coast?

+ Northern Mexico?

Frank Noordhuis - Feb 13,2007 Viewers | Reply
I’m speaking for myself but would not want to see the Canadian Gaggle become a biannual event Eh!, sorry had to say it out loud.
It’s an Canadian event, some pride does come with that for us.
But as Dave said it might be nice to base it from a different area to mix it up.
Halliburton Highlands area and across to Peterborough, North to Algonquin Park as we have so many places to discover yet.
Even our vehicle license plates say it, Ontario - Yours to Discover

Don Maxwell - Feb 15,2007 Viewers | Reply
Frank, I wouldn't want to replace the Georgian Bay Gaggle, but to complement it with one or more gaggles in other places.

For example, First Flight Airport is about halfway between Toronto and Orlando. I'd like that because it's close to home.

But a better example might be Knoxville, Tennessee: It's roughly equidistant from Orlando and Toronto, AND it's within about 500 nm of most of the SeaReys in the eastern half of North America. I don't know much about the area--but Knoxville is surrounded by lots of beautiful lakes, all of them open to seaplanes. (Maybe not all, but the Water Landing Directory says the major ones are open.)
It bears some thinking. Any NE Searey flyers want to comment?

I am ready to host a gaggle anytime for the northwest. Usually good flying weather between April to October. Most alpine lakes open up around May and June depending on elevation.

Here's another suggestion. www.silverlakecottages.com there are 9 cottages and we can get all 9 for the 3rd week of June. The rate is $40 per person per night, very reasonable. All cottages have full cooking facilities and gas bbq. We can have full use of the beach for our planes and here's the great part, the Parrysound airport is only 300 yards up the road, so anyone without a searey can park there. I think a place like this would be great, we could fly at will, sit out at nights with campfires and hot-tub cocktails. Bring our own food so that we don't need to run to a restaurant all the time, and of course we can still have dinners out if we chose to. Anyway just a suggestion, but something along this line would be very reasonable and tons of fun for all. Maybe like June 18th to the 22nd (Monday to Friday) or whatever. Any ideas???

Frank Noordhuis - Mar 11,2007 Viewers | Reply
Dave, Think June is a bit too soon? Looking at the website for silverlake, it's does look very good. Be a nice change from the hotels
They are booked for July I bet.
Dennis Vogan - Mar 14,2007 Viewers | Reply
Dave, this looks like a great spot, particularly if we booked the whole place. We could keep the planes right there or a Parry Sound and have great access to a lot of great flying spots. And we'd have to make a special trip to visit Mandy at Huronia Airpark.

Who would be interested in a June Georgian Bay Gaggle?? The week in late June is the only one where we could have the whole place. Just think: when a storm blasts through and knocks out all the power, there wouldn't be any staff telling us we can't setup the bar in the hallway under the emergency lights.

Don Maxwell - Mar 14,2007 Viewers | Reply
That does look nice, Dennis--but are you sure the water there melts before August?

Dennis Vogan - Mar 14,2007 Viewers | Reply
    BTW: bring skis
June is a beautiful month up here, besides were flying most of the time anyway.

Dennis Vogan - Mar 14,2007 Viewers | Reply
Dave, at the rate things are going, I might need to borrow your truck if I want to bring my plane.

Kevin D'Angelo - Mar 08,2007 Viewers | Reply
Sorry I just caught this thread about me hosting a gaggle. The finger lakes are beautiful and lots of wine but they are not dependable enough for a gaggle. Winds pick up quickly and they don't have any protected areas. I was on Keuka Lake last summer and winds picked up before I had a chance to take off ( I was reminiscing that I was Glen Curtis alighting in the first seaplane take off in the world) I sat bobbing in the lake for two hours with waves splashing over the canopy till I found a ramp to get out of the waves. Plus the boating activity is impossible on weekeinds. The Adirondacks are a possibility however I haven't explored them yet.
Dave I like either the Severn lodge or your latest pick, however I would vote for August as I like warm water to swim in and as far as myself ,have another annual flyin in Late June every year and would be depressed to miss the gaggle.

Dave Lima - Mar 11,2007 Viewers | Reply
Here is a picture of the Parry Sound airport and Silver Lake Lodge location. Because it is on a smaller lake, the water should be much calmer. There are tons of neat places to visit, including some of the previous gaggle flights. Kevin the water should be around 70 so I am told by the owner in mid June, besides there's always the hot-tub. Attachments:

Dave, you can count Linda and I in on this one. You should probably set some dates and see how many you get. Also a site visit to be sure the location really is Searey accessible would be an idea... once the snow melts... if the snow ever melts....

Dave Lima - Mar 16,2007 Viewers | Reply
Darryl, the owner said that there is a windsock on the far point of the bay. Many float planes have visited them so it should be perfect for a searey. If we get enough people interested, then I'll book the whole place and take my chances and gladly head up and get some pictures and report back to the group. The 5 days available are June 18-22. I know later would be better, but if we like the place then maybe next year we could early book it and get it in July or August. So if anyone is interested, please let us know and we'll go from there. Every couple will have their own cottage and there is an executive cottage with 4 bedrooms so the single guys can stay there for $40 per night. I can bring a boat up so that we can ski, fish or whatever.

If we want, the place is also available on the Sat and Sun (16th and 17th) as well, so let me know if that suits so we could stay like Sat to Wed or whatever... BTW here is a weather chart from last june 15th. 77* and sunny, not bad! Attachments:

    OK. the place is reserved
www.silverlakescottages.com
we arrive Monday June 18th and depart Friday June 22. Here are the people coming so far.

Darryl Lynds cottage #4 four people
Dave and Martha cottage #3
Dennis and Tina cottage #9
Bob Toerner and Kendal cottage #1
Lee and Diane Coulman cottage # 7
Rudy and Veronica Wolfs cottage # 5
*****Available***** cottage # 2
Don and Carol Maxwell cottage #8

Larry Woods A-24 cottage # 10
Bill Watkin
($40 per night )

Everyone will have to phone and give a small deposit, I will get you details later.
If some one wants the big #10 cottage all to themselves, let me know but like # 4 it is based on 4 person occupancy at $40 per day.
Just a reminder, it stays daylight untill almost 10:00pm this time of the year, so we should always be able to get in some great flying.
I think if someone wants to stay in a tent, that option should be open as well. I will bring up a boat and a truck plus tons of spare parts, so once you arrive we can make a grocery run for steaks, lobsters, beer etc. Also, anyone flying past my place can drop off their stuf and Martha will bring it up in the truck, plus I have a gas tank on my runway to fill up your plane.

Awesome! We have the entire place to ourselves
www.silverlakescottages.com
so that's great. The owner is gone till April 10th, so no need for a deposit till then. It will be $100. We can leave pur planes right on the beach all the time, and tour around whenever it suits us. Killarney is only about 80 miles away so that could be a great first day of flying to stop in for a fish and chip lunch. They have a huge seaplane ramp that we can drive up on. I am looking for suggestions for following days of flying. Perhaps a tour through Algonquin Park or maybe over to Manitoulin Island? I have friends that run the Sandy Cove Marina, in Port Severn, it's a short 30 minute flight to pop in for lunch or dinner. No matter were we decide to go, it should be a blast. Attachments:

Well Bruno, you could always bring a different girlfriend (or two) This will leave cottage 8 available for anyone that might be interested. Don Maxwell has the first option. Anyone who might be bringing an RV, it's $20 per night.

Bruno Grondin - Mar 20,2007 Viewers | Reply

Great news! Mr. and Mrs. Maxwell will grace us with their presence at the June fly-in. There are still rooms available in the large cottage #10 or a nearby motel, remember the Parry Sound airport is right here, so anyone without a searey can still come up and park at the airport.

Dave Lima - Mar 20,2007 Viewers | Reply
Bruno, if she's having her ' holydays' then she won't be much use to you anyway, so come on over and go flying.

    Hey Dave
I am so bummed that you picked that week- Like is said before I have another flyin every year late June and can't make it at that time. I will be in South Dakota this year and can't even drop in for a day. I will have to fly up for some mini gaggles this summer to take the the sting away from missing this one.

Dave Lima - Mar 21,2007 Viewers | Reply
No problem, the week picked us, it was the only one available. I'm sure we'll see you sometime in the summer. Thank you Lee Coulman for this google picture with all the info! Attachments:

Lee, yes Martha is driving the truck, what about Diane? Is she driving up in a vehicle as well?

Lee Coulman - Jun 11,2007 Viewers | Reply
Yes, the vehicle is C-GJIB. She hasn't mentioned any negative effects from our last belly landing together...(on the hull) !!! Her priorities were this morning...1. swimsuit. 2 towels 3 sunscreen 4. book.... no mention of another vehicle, but her big concern was how to you fit 40 lbs in a 20 lb hole?

Kenneth Leonard - Jun 24,2007 Viewers | Reply
Lee - the answer is obvious...a smaller swimsuit! You could also try a book with smaller words.
