Frontpage Splash and Dash

Today's Orlando Sentinel newspaper had a front page headline: 'Splash and Dash.' It was a mostly positive article about seaplanes in Florida. Check it out on-line. Attachments:

The comments responding to the article are overwhelmingly negative. If you have time, post something nice about seaplanes on their web site.

Concerning the feedback to this article:
The people responding to this article would be better served directing their rage towards jetskis, not seaplanes. Seaplane pilots are licensed. Noise pollution, wasting gas, polluting our lakes, danger and accidents are what jetskis excel at. Underaged, unlicensed children playing on 75mph water rockets is the first place that this anger should be focused.

It sure would be shocking one day to read an article about seaplanes that doesn't make reference to fatalities. Flying is fun, did anyone mention this to the author?
It's a generally positive story, but contains one paragraph that is typical of what the popular press does in reporting on aviation:

'Florida's seaplane devotees say they are sensitive to safety issues on the water. They are trained to make two passes at different elevations before landing to check for watercraft. But accidents still occur, as attested by last month's fatal collision between a small boat and a seaplane taking off from a Louisiana bayou.'

The story is about seaplanes in Florida, but the one negative example cited is in Louisiana--so it's irrelevant to the story about Florida seaplanes.

My reply got eaten by their software, so I rewrote it in Word and cut and pasted. Unfortunately, all the apostrophes got turned into gibberish.

Arrggghhh!

Jim, Write your comments in windows notepad (under accessories). This will keep all the Word @#$! out of it.

Yeah, Eric, I tried that after posting... I can't edit it, either. I guess it's stuck like that forever. I did join the community, so maybe at a later date I can go in and make the changes... if I remember - which I won't.

I will send an email to the editor of the print version. BTW, I've known Margaret for several years and that's one hell of a little Irishwoman! She don't give up.

Morning all. I responded to the Orlando article, but used a fictitious name (John Miller) since I have had some discussions with persons in the Maitland/Winter Park areas concerning NO LANDINGS on the lakes there. What those city ordnances all come down to, basically, is that there are a lot of wealthy folks living on the chain of lakes who just don't want to be bothered. Some may have had a noisy or troublesome experience in the past with seaplanes...

Even though the article represented that Seaplane Landings are prohibited, (even quoting W.P. Police) the actual city ordinance wording is 'It shall be unlawful ... a regular landing place or base of operation for float planes or seaplanes'. Do 2 landings a year constitute a regular landing place? does 3...4?
I can't blame the reporter this time. She reported the information from sources that should have been reliable.

Well, Dave, we'll soon find out. Our friend's been landing on Lk Maitland, lately and I plan to do it as well, just as soon as Swoosh Too is ready. I seriously doubt the WP ordinance would stand a court challenge, which would only come into play if a violation citation is issued. You and Chief need to have a few educaional words with the good Lt.

'it's very, very dangerous.' Grrrrrrrr. Like the Cop Lt. knows squat about seaplanes.

My understanding is that Maitland prohibits seaplane landing, while Winter Park restricts it. Lake Maitland is in both jurisdictions. Most likely he would land in the Maitland (north) section.
Both cities have a reciprocity agreement for enforcement on the lakes. Some people have the horsepower to make a serious challenge. I hope he prevails for us all.
I just read a statistic report which stated from 1999 through 2003, Florida
had 5079 boating accidents which resulted in 277 deaths.

I just edited our friend's name from my post and would appreciate it if you did, too. I forgot this was a public site. Maybe the Genie ain't out of the bottle yet. <g>

When I fought the law and the law won, I did a bit of research on local ordinances close to me. I think I looked up Winter Garden, Ocoee and Oviedo, too, and they didn't have any NIMBY ords, but I won't swear to that. ;-> Anyway, none of them will stand up to a challege. That's just my opinion, IANAL.

Yes, Maitland has a prohibition, which is why I think our friend landed in the WP side. At the lakes board meeting where the unanimous (repeal the ord) vote was taken, the chairman of the Maitland lakes board came to make their (his?) point. He was vehemently oppposed to letting the camel getting it's nose in the tent. Solly Cholly!

Does Doug know about your project? Have you talked to the good LT? Attachments:
