I spoke with Kevin at Lockwood Aviation recently to inquire about alternative oils to the Mobil 1 MX4T 10W-40 fully synthetic 4-cycle he had previously recommended for use in my 914. My problem was that I was currently having a very difficult time finding any of that type oil locally, but if you were lucky enough to find it the cost was close to $15.00/quart! He said Lockwood is also now recommending Mobil 1 V Twin 20W-50 fully synthetic for summer use here in Florida and the same type, but 10W-40 in the winter months. This oil is much easier to find at most Discount Auto Parts stores and the cost runs about $7.50/quart.

    Good work, Joe!

I've found that the Auto Zone stores in central VA stock MX4T, and for a reasonable price.

The Mobil web site says they have changed the name to Mobil 1 Racing 4T. It is the same oil-with the gear additive, only using the name they have been using in Europe.

Thanks, Dennis! I saw some of that racing oil recently, but didn't know it was the same stuff and passed it up.

To reinforce this point, when I recently ordered MX4T from Lockwood, then sent me Racing 4T.

If you are running fully synthetic,What do you do when your on a long trip and you use 100ll

Just use the 100LL but change the oil as soon as you get back. No sweat!

FYI, an article in the July 07 Kitplanes mag on the lockwood engine school indicates that the design of the oil tank encourages (purposefully) the lead to stay on the sides of the oil tank, so if you run LL100, be sure to wipe out the inside of the tank upon oil change.
