If you belong to the AOPA or are looking for a good reason to join, then maybe their new Internet Flight Planner might interest you. It's at http://www.aopa.org/aifp/index.cfm

Here are sample screen dumps. Note that the weather is automatically superimposed on the chart (even if you don't get a briefing) and the wind barbs are for your cruising altitude.

Attachments:

That's very nice Don. Also be sure to check out the feature of Google Earth that allows you to overlay sectionals over the earth map. I enjoy 'flying' the route before the actual flight.

Thanks! I'd forgotten about that one. And I just now noticed that GoogleEarth can display real-time weather, including clouds and radar returns.

    Don,
I've been experimenting with their IFP as well. One function that I like but cannot find in AOPA's, is the 'rubber
band' feature that allows one to add a zig or a zag mid route. Have you seen that?

The weather and wind overlays are really great, and I like the route shown on a Sectional for SeaRey trips altho I
file IFR in my Piper and use RMS Flitesoft flight-planning for those flights.

Frank, alas the rubber band is gone from the new version. However, you can double click on the map to add new way points to your route. It's almost as good.

Frank, I like the rubber band thing, too. While the IFP was still in beta I traded emails with the developer about it. He said it wasn't feasible at that time. I replied that GoogleMaps does it, but he never answered. But you might try asking him now. He might find it feasible now.

In the meantime, Eric is right about double-clicking. Ctrl+click works magic, too.
