Notice of Administrative Postings Removal for Space Saving

As you may have noticed, the site is now in Code Orange status. The Giga Bite Terrorists are threatening to overwhelm the site. The space available is rapidly being taken up by large postings. The Administrators have agreed to combat this menace by cutting out some of the older, space hogging postings.

The primary offenders are video files. There are also some rather large photographs. The plan is to start removing some of the older files and photos to make room for new stuff.

If there is anything older than 2008 that you just absolutely, positively have to have on the site, let one of us know. We’ll do what we can to protect the site’s historic artifacts. But, in the absence of redeeming social value, we’re gonna start taking ‘em out.

The Site Adminostratocrats: Judy, Don & Dan

One thing I do on my personal MyFamily.com site is to reduce all photographs to medium resolution for a 4x6 print. Since many contibuting folk are apt to upload a 2,4 or 6 Meg photo, reducing them to 400 KBytes eliminates a ton of storeage with minimum loss of content. But then you probably have considered this already.

In event you haven't, the Administrators (only) can go to <Utilities> <View Site Statistics> <Resize Photos> Click each photo box to resize then select <Medium 4x6> or whatever size is desired.

Another less onerous task for Administrators is to plead with the Gigaybye Terrorists to pre-reduce the size of their photos before uploading. A photo on the computer screen of as little as ~ 100K looks fine--just don't try to make an 8x10 of it!

Just a suggestion, keep up the good work!

Should we start deleting videos?

You can delete your electric gear video Dave, I've memorized it and saved it in two places!

Not yet, Dave. It's not a crisis and people might want to identify some of the materials for archiving. If we drop below 5% RC (residual capacity), we can take off some of the older large files first.

Good suggestion noted, Frank. This is the nuclear option for some of us notorious large photo guys, but we'll do what we have to do.

I recommend deleting (or resizing) the especially large videos first.

We'll certainly go for the 'high' value 'high' volume stuff first, Eric.

What is the cost to expand the size? I see that new members still get around to it and watch some of the old stuff.

It's true, Dave. There is some classic stuff.

The site costs about $130 per year at its present size. Adding capacity would cost another $30.
