Gentlemen, another broadcast said the plane was reg To a Bret Smith, Rhode Island, which was Brets Searey. I just don`t think that someone else was flying that plane though. Eye witness`s said that the plane had done several landing and take offs during the morning and evening. Can`t help but think of his two children. Bret and family have been here to my place a couple years ago. Will post more details as more is broadcast.

Very bad news. I think Bret had just finished his second year of teaching and apparently was very glad he had made the career change. His house on the airpark was finished and the family were settled in and enjoying their idyllic new life.

Bruce & I are deeply saddened about the news of Bret Smith, and his passenger. Our deepest sympathy to Alex, his wife, and two children, our thoughts and prayers are with them now at their time of grief. The three Administrators were asking was this appropriate to put on the S&D site, since it involves a SeaRey; we decided as long as it does not involve technical discussions; to leave it on the S&D site. If this turns to why and what happened; then it will be switched to the technical site. Bret was a beloved member of both sites and anyone who met Bret was his friend forever. Judy & Bruce

Charlie Pickett found a video of the crash happening. It's at this address: http://www.volunteertv.com/news/headlines/47162142.html

Several minutes of raw video footage is on that page, over on the right, about halfway down. There are two clips labeled 'EXCLUSIVE...' The full video is '10:14'. There's some strong language in it.

It looks like a stall-spin event while turning final.

My condolences to the families. I keep hearing of all these nonfatal and now fatal crashes by pilots with far more hours than me and sometimes think , am I making a mistake going with this type of aircraft? But it is a dream I have worked for for 20 years to get a pilots license and the lake front property and build the house with the large garage with the hanger door on the back. All that is left is the Sea Rey kit I have already put a deposit on. I hope I will aways be diligent to the check lists and flight characteristics of the Sea Rey, and if I do make a mistake, that I am alone in the plane.

Is their a direct link to the video? All I get are the commercials and then a frozen pic of the splash.

Dennis Scearce - Jun 08,2009 Viewers | Reply
Just remember that the Searey is a boat load of fun - and the people that fly them are fun loving people. But it's a real airplane and it will bite you just as fast as any other airplane - especially at low altitudes where there is no margin for recovering from a mistake or equipment malfunction. It does not discriminate between those that are brand new pilots and those with thousands of hours. Fly outside of it's envelope or neglect the maintenance and it can (will) cause a lot of heartache.

Dennis Vogan - Jun 08,2009 Viewers | Reply
Thomas, I think most will tell you that we all reflect on ourselves when an incident such as this happens. This is a terrible tragedy and I can only think of Bret's family at this time and how much Bret will be missed. I never met him, but I do remember all the pictures of Bret with the family on the site.

While this nightmare was still unfolding, John D and I were just climbing out of our SeaReys after a fabulous day of flying, splashing and visiting Bill W in Peterborough. While stretching outside of the cockpit, I told John I was just amazed that one can feel so comfortable and in-sync in the left seat of a SeaRey. Experiencing the the SeaRey has become a very important part of me, second only to my family, and they know I wouldnt be living my life to the max if I were to cut this part out. It's a natural high for me every time I fire up the engine and leave the ground. Its an experience that my family understands just how important it is to me and they also understand the risks that go along with it. After all, weve had our share of incidents that have affected us in a major way. After loosing a plane and a friend at the same time, my wife insisted that I take up a new hobby. She didnt want me to fly anymore. After a while, Tina understood just how much flying is a part of who I am. Along came the SeaRey.

So is it a mistake in going with this type of aircraft? Its difficult for you to judge if you havent lived it, hence the question. I can tell you this will remain a part of me. It is a mistake if we dont come away from this learning something from this tragedy.

Don Maxwell - Jun 08,2009 Viewers | Reply
Thomas, that's the only link I know of to the video. You have to put up with the commercial, but then it should begin playing. (I just tried it a minute ago.)

As for your SeaRey kit--this doesn't seem to have been a SeaRey-specific accident. Instead, it apparently was the most common type of GA fatality, the stall-spin event when turning base to final at too slow an airspeed and probably with the controls crossed up. That can happen in any airplane.

Don Maxwell - Jun 08,2009 Viewers | Reply
I don't mean to speak harshly of Bret--on the contrary! He was one of the first SeaRey guys I met at Garner's, back in 2000, and I liked him right away--a big guy with a broad smile and a cowboy hat. And the SeaRey dream. He had that bigtime, just like the rest of us, only maybe even bigger. A few years later we joined up to land on a lake near Taunton, Massachusetts. A friend of mine there took this photo of us taxiing to a beach, where we were joined by Mike Dupont in Charlie Pickett's SeaRey, and we all stood on the beach talking SeaReys while Charlie made a smoke pass overhead in his Decathalon. It's one of my favorite moments, all of us looking up at the smoke trail and grinning, Bret with the widest grin of all. He was a big kid who always seemed to delight in the moment. I like remembering him that way. Attachments:

Don, I don't know you, I didn't know Bret, I know no one here in fact, but I do know about death, I became someone numb to it over the years for various reasons, I can tell you all this one true fact, people always try to make sense of it to themselves so it is natural to speculate on the cause, you cannot help it, it actually shows that the event has affected you, it shows you care. This is especially true in a highly focussed community like this where everyone is able to wholly say 'there but by the grace of God go I', from your technical description to Dennis asking himself and others if he should be buying this type of aircraft, it is all part of the grief process.

My condolences to all his family and friends and to the family and friends of the passenger, it is a tragic loss.

Maybe, when the shock of all this subsides a bit, could we have a thread or two amongst the experienced SeaRey pilots of stall characteristics of the SR?

Thomas - I had a hard day Sunday trying to decide if I had the 'right' to risk my family's future to satisfy my personal desires. I spilled the story to my wife, not an airplane fan, expecting her to tell me my flying days were over. (we don't hold back the truth from each other) She turned to me and said that if I gave up flying the searey, I'd turn into a frustrated old man at 46. She was right. It has been and continues to be my dream and flying the plane is my passion. If anything good could possibly come from this, it may be that I will include Bret in my pre-flight checklist from now on. Godspeed Bret and thanks for sharing life's passion with us!

Following our dreams is a large part of life. Without dreams life would be so hollow. We lost one of own but need to put it in perspective. More than 450,000 die from smoking cigarettes every year and they kill over 40,000 unsuspecting people from second hand smoke. What did they get out of that besides a dirty addiction. Us Searey owners enjoy an experience that few people can share . When we do share it with others, the smile on their faces is irreplaceable as you will have when you complete your kit Tom.
Yes, flying seaplanes in general is more risky than land planes. When I fly my Cessna 210 I rarely am below 500ft except for landing, where when I fly the Searey I am rarely above 500ft. Every time i fly i do at least 15 to 20 take offs and ldgs versus one in the 210. Where i play we have wires across rivers and lakes to deal with and terrain all around us. Our landing strips are full of logs and wakes and boats and gators for my southern bretheren. We fly so slow the weather moves faster than us. So why do we do it. Well I would not have it any other way. I have been flying for over 25 years and have never enjoyed flyiing as much as now with the Searey. There isn't a day that i don't look at the weather and note if it is a Rey day or not. If i have a bad day I know if i head to the airport it will be a good day.
Yes we need to rise to the occasion to make it safe for us and our loved ones. We need to focus on the things that bite us. Bret unfortunately will bring attention to a very important aspect of flying low and slow. numbe one is airspeed ,banking and coordinated turns. We will never know for sure what happened. A possiblility is some unwanted passenger input on the controls as he turned base to final. Something simple as his passenger freaking out and shifting his feet and jamming the rudder pedal at the wrong time is just one thing that we will never know ,so we can't pre judge his acccident. We do know he was doing something he loved and sharing it with a friend. We will miss him

Don, is very accurate and correct, to slow, to low, and to steep a turn, so sad for such an experienced pilot. By himself, he probably flew this turn a hundred times.
However, on a hot day, at altitude, totally different.

This is a portion of a message from Alex (Bret's wife):

.....the arrangements are for two visits at Tarpley's Funeral home on Madison St.
The first is for this Thursday evening the 11th from 4-7 pm.
The second is Friday 12th from 1-5 (I'm pretty sure about this, but you may want to call the Funeral home to double check.)
And the Celebration of Bret's Life is at our home on Saturday night starting at 6 PM.
This will involve food (to be determined) Beer (bud lite of course) music (all kenny all the time) and lots and lots of toasts, tributes and tears.
Everyone has asked what they can do to help and I wish I had an answer because right now there is nothing that I want except Bret. But I do appreciate the offers and the emotions behind it.
In the months and years to come my family and I will need all of you in different ways at different times; so Thank You in advance for all that you will do for all of us.

    Hi Charlie,
I can bring it over to 'my pictures' area in my computer, and put it on my Olympic camera card and make a 4x6 color photo of it for you, and mail it to you........would that work for you? I'll probably lighten it up a little also. I made the regular sized picture, and I zoomed in for a closer picture, two pictures.

I remember Bret building at the same time as many of us. He had such huge passion for his family, his life and truth be told, his SeaRey and SeaRey friends. He had the greatest stories, full of humor, charm and fact too. Back in the time those years ago, with a young family and a young career he did the best one could on a budget, like most of us, but what a fine job he did of his SeaRey. I remember when we all cheered Bret as he rolled his SeaRey beauty out of the chicken barn, minus wings but plus an engine for first start. All the chickens followed outside to see what the 'big bird' was up to. OMG what a fuss when the engine started!

Many pictures of the kids helping out on the plane followed. Wonderful photos and great articles of him and Alex on their SeaRey journeys. Front page material they both were.

We will miss Bret greatly. His spirit, his passions describe most of us here I think we all get it. Birds of a feather I can hear him say. Let us live, fly, learn and pass the knowledge of hard fought experience on to the many SeaRey pilots yet to come.

Jon, please include me in any plans for a memorium to benefit the family.

Like the rest of you who met Brett it was a case of instant liking for his genuiness, openness and all-out enthusiasm. I met him at his chicken barn when Streaker was 95% finished and he was just bubbling over with how close he was to getting airborne. met him again down in Florida same wonderful ball of enthusiasm and support if you never gt chance to meet him his 'Brett-ness' just radiated from all his postings. His accident set me thinking as well especially as I'm out of practice but DanN our resident muse said it best 'I think I have to go fly now'. Thanks for posting Alex's address, next job is to send her a card.

    Hi Guys,

I just received this reponse from Alex (below). I will be meeting with a banker this week. I want to make sure that any contributions we make will be off limits to any possible law suit that may arise. I also want to harvest the generosity of this group during this tragic event. If anyone has any experience or advice you may contact me at jladd@cfl.rr.com. Thanks, Jon

Dear Jon,
Thank you so much. I really appreciate your offers. I have been overwhelmed by all the love that has been showered upon us. I am a little unable to make decisions right now. My first instinct is to say no, we are fine. And we truly are fine.
But I was just talking to some close friends that one of the lessons I hope to take from this terrible terrible loss is that I have to learn to say 'yes.' Bret always said yes.
Anyway, so if you believe that people would like to do this for us, then I shall say 'Yes.' And please know that I am so grateful for the friendship that you and Dan and the entire Searey family has extended to Bret. He loved his plane and he loved being a part of the wider community of pilots.
With love,alex

My deepest thoughts go to their families. I'm so sorry for their loss. I remember Sport Pilot article 'Searey Date' some years ago and that really got me into this plane. Can't say anything more right now...

The TV station that broadcast the video of Bret's accident now has some analysis by actual airplane pilots at: http://www.volunteertv.com/video/?autoStart=true&topVideoCat

I don`t need to see the video again. It is burned into my mind for ever. I pass near the crash site very often and all I see is Bret going down. I was taken to the hospital with what was thought to be a heart attach wed. night, even though I was in pain the pic of the crash went before me and then later the next day when I passed by the crash site. It`s forever there.

Sorry to hear about that Charlie. Take it easy, and try not to dwell on this. I know it might be very difficult not to; but for the sake of your health at this time, try to think of only the good things about Bret. He had quite an interesting and full life, all fit into his young years. When a pet passes away, I think of all of the good times we had with each other, how good of a life that pet had; and I feel good that I was able to give that good life to that pet. Of course there are many moments of crying, but those are also cleansing moments, healing moments to one's heart. No matter what the loss, a good friend or a beloved pet, the pain is the same. Try to put that pain aside and heal yourself first, then you will be better able to deal with the loss of Bret. Judy

Administrator's note--not to alarm anyone: This 11 year old thread showed up this evening in the "New" list--which happens whenever someone posts or edits a post. Most of the posts in the thread had not been translated correctly during the Great Migration from the old MyFamily site that used to host Splash and STS. Since it was already going to come up as "new" for everyone, I've just gone through it, editing all of the posts so that they look as the original posters wanted.

The thread is about Bret Smith; but several of the posters are no longer with us, either.
